I was looking at this weapon at Walmart. It caught my eye in the display case, but when I handled it I was kind of disappointed then.
The cartridge clip seemed flimsy and didn't seem to fit very well.
The Brownell scope that was on it looked like the best part of the setup, the stock kinda looked like something you could get with a couple of Cracker Jack boxtops and a couple of 20s .
Saleslady said she could order a 700 that would be better.

I am thinking of looking at a used Model 70 older Winny.I guess I was brainwashed by my Father as a youngster growing up on this brand.
I am wonder what others think of my thinking.

Thanks for reading my idle banter.

You have everything right (good choice on caliber and youth model) except for the middle 7 in the model. Replace that 7 with a 0 and your good to go!

I bought a youth Model 700 in 243 back on Black Friday at Walmart, and got it for less than $300 with the sale price and the rebate. I finally got around to shooting it, and it seems like it's going to be a nice shooting little rifle for my granddaughter. I would not consider buying a Model 770..........period. Look around, and you will find better rifles.

yes!

Better to look elsewhere. Try Savage Axis of Ruger American for a better rifle at a comparable price.

I too would pass on the 770.
Wal mart runs the youth 700 in 243 on sale for $297 about twice a year or the new Remington 783 in the 243 compact model can be found online for under $290. I bought one of those in 308 and like it.

If your going to stick to the budget guns Id look next at the Ruger american then the Axis. Ive bought 2 Axis and both were good shooters.

If ya want to step up a couple hundred a youth Model 7 is hard to beat and is a gun that could be handed down for many years.

Really would depend on the price. Around here the 770 goes for around $300, the 700 starts around $600 if you can find one that cheap. I bought one of those 770's in 243 youth for my wife. Great gun. Adjusted the trigger and it's super light. Had to cut one of the stock screws because it was making the bolt bind, once I got that sorted out rifle is accurate as well. I would give the axis a better rating though other than the poor trigger. If you get the accutrigger model you're all set.

What are the prices down there on the firearms?
Savage axis
Rem 770
Ruger American
If a 700 is $30 or so more then a 770 I certainly would not be buying the 770.

I agree with the RUN Runaway theory for the 770! Complete and udder junk.
A model 700 or a Vangaurd , can't comment on the Ruger , but the axis ain't much better then a 770.

This begs the question Who is buying this crap, they are still making it so who is buying it?? I personally have never met anyone that would admit to owning a 770!

Check out the Ruger American and the newer Savage Axis II with the Accu-Trigger for a few hundred more You can check in to the Browning A-bolt Hunter Rifles or a CZ Rifle?

I own that junk. Had an axis as well. Fact is the axis shot just as well as my rem 700 does, but I guess it's still junk. Too many guys like to poo-poo the cheaper guns just to justify spending so much on a rifle. Rifles are just tools to me. They go out when it's cold and wet, sit behind the truck seat and kill what needs to be killed. Now don't get me wrong I like to have nice things too, but it's hard to justify 3-4 times the price and not get that increase in accuracy.

I wasn't trying to hurt feelings , I guess I could have put IMO. The is a difference between cheap and value for your dollar. In my opinion by the time you buy an axis , replace the trigger spring with rifle basix or a timmney , throw away the crap scope that come with it you are no further ahead of the game budget wise in dollars per value. For a boat paddle truck gun that can be tossed around it may seem good but I don't beleive the quality is there to have it last in that role.
I have set up 3 axis for guys done the trigger mods mounted better optics and broke them in with factory ammo, I would never buy one. On the other hand my buddy bought his son the newer savage model 10 youth accu stock, accu trigger, and a decent Nikon monarch scope in the package for under 700$ Canadian. I had to rebore sight the scope as it was mounted on a slight cant to it. It shoulder well and shot well and this kids kids will be able to use this rifle 25 years from now. Value for dollar there is absolutley no comparison.
The weatherby Vangaurd falls into this same category again IMO.. It is my truck gun of choice and was under 500$ Canadian no optics. Another decent choice for budget gun dollars for value would be the TC Venture, Howa, then for a bit more you get tikka ,browning , Winchester , the better Remington models. It can then be argued that the dollar for value goes the other way after 1000$ or so but that's a whole other debate.
Sorry for the hurt feelings hope you can see where I am coming from.

Axis is 100X better than the 770 which agreed is a complete failure by Remington. I would look at the Axis and the Ruger American.

I am by no means a gun snob and I understand that not everyone can afford or is willing to spend top dollar on their firearms. But the 770 is the worst rifle I've ever been around, I've had a few experiences dealing with friends rifles. The fit, finish, function, and accuracy were so far below average that I would call them unmeasurable. I only know one person who still owns one and I geuss he has been happy with his "accurate enough" rifle that gets shot once a year to take a whitetail at maybe a 100 yards.

I'm not sure of the pricing situation in Canada but in the states an Axis can be had for 279, the Ruger American and Axis II, and Remington 783 can be had for 350-400, and the big stores have 700 ADLs for any where from 300 on sale to just north of 400. All of these would get my vote ahead of the 770. The American would be me top pick, mostly because the V blocks in the stock work and work well. I'm kind of a 700 guy so I wouldn't rule out the ADL either.

No hurt feelings. Just differences of opinion. Scope from my axis is a low end bushnell. Works fine though. It's sitting on my model 10 right now.
Big difference up here is you can't get a 700 for $300. It seems we have to pay a premium on them. Now I think you can find a blued, no scope axis for under $300, I had a stainless one with scope that was about $410. The 770 if I recall was $300 w/scope and the 783 were going for around $380 or so last fall w/scope. The regular price on an sps is around $700. So someone up here has decided to screw us over on the pricing of the 700's or subsidize our purchase of lower end firearms. Personally I'm surprised the 770 and 783 sell at all in the states with such a marginal price difference.

To note as well Walmart does not sell firearms up here.

Ok just did an internet search on the 700 adl and sps, seems cabelas does not have an adl available in Canada, our lowest end 700 is the sps. I'm sure they would sell a boatload of them as many guys would buy them for the action and sell off the rest of it.
