Looking at Ruger Mark IV

Ive always wanted a good quality and accurate .22 autoloading pistol. I have decided on a Ruger Mark IV. They make several models. This is for target, plinking, and small game hunting. I have been leaning towards either the Hunter or Competition models that have 6.88 inch barrels over the Target or 22/45 models that have a 5.5 inch barrel. My thought with the longer barrel is better velocity and a stable hold. I will more than likely mount an optic on it so sight radius does not really matter. Anyone with any insights? I would appreciate your advise and Happy New Year.

I bought a 7&7/8" barreled Ruger Mark 1 about 1981. We have covered thousands of miles together and have never regretted buying it. The shorter bull barrels were not available for the Mark 1 but it would pack a little more conveniently with a shorter barrel. The so called standard pistols were available with shorter barrels but they didn't have adjustable sights. It is a very accurate pistol too!

I have a 22/45 w/5.5" barrel and it is muzzle heavy enough to suite me. Has the adjustable sights, very accurate, and carries well.

Of course, I'm partial to the 1911's

I’ve owned dozens of Ruger Standard Series pistols, and worked on many more. Absolutely love them, and ABSOLUTELY love the MkIV among them. I’ve never enjoyed the 22/45’s as much as the original Standard grip, but the difference between the two is really just ergonomics - 22/45’s make fantastic companions to a 1911 for anyone playing 2700 games.

The slab side Competition model is my favorite among all of the model options of every Mark revision. My wife likes the fluted Hunter better. I use an Ultradot Matchdot on my Mark II Competition and have a Leupold VX-3 2-8x pistol scope on my Mark III Competition. Haven’t decided what I want long term on my Mark IV Competition, but right now it’s wearing an Sig Romeo.

The only model option which has garnered my favor over the Competition models - besides my Mark II KMK6 taper barrel which was my first 22 pistol in 1998 - is the new Mark IV Target Threaded Stainless, as I love shooting suppressed. Planning to order an integrally suppressed Mark IV upper as well, just ‘cuz. Should make a dandy pistol for hunting coons over hounds.

The only MK IV I have is a 22/45 LITE model. It's a keeper and the MK IV sure makes cleaning a snap. I do have a stainless Hunter 5.5" but it is a MK III series.

I have the Target model and it shoots fine. Lots of fun and as said above, an easy cleaning process when you decide to.

I've thought about getting the longer barreled versions but my 5.5" Mark IVs are pretty stable and shoot very well and I wasn't sure about the extra weight of the longer ones. But if you don't mind the weight or size then go for it. I mounted a 2x red dot on one of Target models and the dang thing was literally out-shooting my 10/22 with 9x scope on whistle pigs when using both with shooting sticks.

I have a 6 7/8 comp MKII slab side that’s a joy to shoot and just as accurate as the operator and ammo. It was scoped when I bought it and was a nice set up but not to my liking. Shot a 5.5 heavy barrel a lot in my youth and I preferred it over what I have now as I just plink and teach children how to shoot a pistol with it mostly.
