Looking for a good goose call that isn't $150.

I'm going to try goose hunting this upcoming hunting season (2010/2011).

I have never done it before and I don't know if it's something I'm going to be doing much. Therefore, I don't want to spend a lot of money on a call just to try.

I'm sure the Foiles, Sean Mann, etc. calls are great, but Spending $100+ on a hand call seems pretty crazy to me.

Are there any production calls that sound good and are easy to use?

RNT goosezilla
Grounds Poly Super mag
Winglock has a couple
Buck Gardner has all acrylic goose calls for $60, if you call him up and order one, he should be able to tune the call for you, which will help a lot.

Go out to the local sporting goods store and test some out.

depending on how much time you want to invest in practicing you call I would stick with a flute to start short reed are a lot harder to blow. I blow a foiles streat meat honker short reed ($179). But I do some guiding in the fall. I would say that if you want to give goose hunting a try and don't want to devote your summer to practicing your call, I would go with a western river flute. thats what I started with and I know a few weekend hunters that still love them. But if you find out that you love goose hunting then you will be buying a short reed and its harder to switch over once you learn one way or the other. If you choose to go with a short reed I woud have to say that the goosezilla or foiles meat grinder would be the best deal. Good luck on your call search hope this helps. If you have any questions shoot me a PM I woud be more then happy to help you out

Watch eBay. I collect as well as speculate. The call market is pretty flat right now so it's a buyers market. You have plenty of time between now and goose season to pick up a decent call without spending a fortune. I also would recommend a flute to start out. Very easy to use with a minimal amount of practice. You can probably pick up an Olt A-50 for cheap if you watch the listings. In fact there's one listed now for $9.99 plus $3.41 S&H. It doesn't get any cheaper than that. Do a saved search and they will show up as an email reminder as they are listed. The Olt L-22 although not a flute is a very easy to use and inexpensive call. You can probably pick one up for under $20 including S&H. Faulks also makes a decent sounding inexpensive goose call if you prefer wood over plastic Olt. Your best bet for an inexpensive production call right now is eBay.

I didn't ask but I assume we're talking Canadas here.

A-50 eBay item #310205580113
Hope this helps.

Thanks guys.

Yeah, I'm looking for Canadian.

I have a couple people that I can go with, which will help keep the cost down with decoys and what not. I just want to learn how to call them, because I love to call anything I can.

Zink makes a plastic version that runs about 25 bucks. They have begginer guts and are super easy to use. Sound very good too. I had one. A lot of the cheaper short reeds I've used sound horrible. I'm sure they call in geese fine but they sound terrible. I definitely think it's good to at least start with a cheaper call just to get the hang of it and figure out what qualities you do and don't like. Then if you get into it you can upgrade. That's just me though. There's plenty of guys who have killed way more birds than me with 20 dollar calls.

If you want to have some fun with your buddies you can show up in the blind with a working "Store Display." Faulks was one of several callmakers that made them. These were duck & goose calls on steroids meant as countertop advertisements. They were giant sized "working" examples of their production calls that were roughly 12" long by 3 3/4" in diameter and had the same guts in them used in their normal size production calls. When call prices were up they ran about $80. I saw one not too long ago for under $40 and they will call geese. Your buddies will bust a gut laughing and if you want to be the topic of discussion just wear one into a diner!! LOL.

I forgot to mention the link I posted for the zink call has an option to get a instructional calling DVD with the call. It's a very good DVD.
