Lynx cycle?

Two questions for you Alaskans.

Over here in Sweden we have the small game cycles with ups and downs a few years apart, and I understand you have them too, and also for lynx. I'm starting to play with the idea to go over to Alaska for a couple of winter weeks to try to figure lynx calling out.

Where do you reckon you are in that cycle now, going up, going down, peaking, or at a low? I guess that it won't be the same for all of Alaska in the same year, but maybe most areas follow each other within a year or two?

According to ADF&G's statewide annual report from inforation provided by interior trappers last year, winter of 2003-04 was the cyclic low for snowshoe hare and Lynx, with an increase in the winter of 2004-05, the cyclic high is expected in 3 to 4 years. Reported harvest winter 99-00 was 2191, winter 02-03 was 752, winter 03-04 was 723. Hope this helps.

The June issue of Fur-Fish-Game had a good article on the "Cyclical rise and fall of the Alaska Lynx." The author, Marty Meierotto, trapped the same area for almost 20 years. It's a good read. MI VHNTR
