M1 vs. M14

Looking at getting a rifle for shooting DCRA service rifle matches (I believe CMP service rifle is the US equivalent.) I own an AR-15 with optics which is more competitive than an iron sighted battle rifle, but not always as fun

Looking at buying a shooter grade M1 Garand or getting a Norc M-14 clone and buying a walnut stock and swapping out the sights for USGI (Norc sights are rough).

The Norc M-14 is $500 + $150 for a stock and $100 for sights. A shooter Garand with an excellent barrel is $1300-$1500 up here.

I would be reloading so the availability of good bulk .308 would be negligible.

What say you guys?

I'm up in Canada. They are still imported. Up until this year they were $400 in a synthetic stock with 2 mags, but they moved up the price and they are going for $500-$600 at retailers now.

Ah yes, Canada. The land of inexpensive M14's and great bacon...LOL

One word of caution if "Norc" is the Norinco. A friend bought a Norinco M1A a number of years ago and the windage serrations wore flat on the receiver in short order. This was just one rifle and may not be a problem w/all of their products, but IIRC, someone made a hardened insert (might have been a 1/2 min. conversion) that fit between receiver and windage knob and that took care of the problem.

The M1 has a little more bedding surface than the M1A or M14 and holds its bedding a bit better. Either makes a good match rifle w/proper tuning, however, so go with whichever fits your fancy.

I no longer have either, but I have spent a bit of time shooting battle rifle with M1 Garands and M1A's (as well as a bit of hunting with them, and a LOT of 'plinking and grinning').

The Garands were great rifles, but the M1A's make my heart purr. Every time I hold one, I need it.

I have both and love both. But if I had to pick one, it would be the Garand without question. I can clearly shoot better scores with the Garand than the M1A. It just fits me better when shooting from the prone or sitting position. The M1A has the advantage of the 20 rd. mags and is a clearly better option if you are running a optic.

I just happen to have one of those 03 Snipers too! It will shoot .6 @ 100 all day long with the 155 AMAX. My Garand is a Springfield that was completely restored by DGR. It is a work of art and can do 1" @ 100 with the iron sights!

You sure don't need to draw to that pair! Beautiful wood on the M1 & super clean A4!

In the late '50's our company received several (6 IIRC) brand new 1903-A4's. Unfortunately they were relegated to the arms room, as they came with no mounts or scopes.
