For across the course usage, like you Clarence, I've used the M1903's, M1's, M14's and the the AR series. Each are endearing in their own aspects. The one that in my memory, that was the most fun was the Garand, although the M14 was always following a very close second. Best scores was usually obtained with the AR when limited to the 600 yard line. Which honestly I chalk that up to "shooter fatigue" in the 88+ round strings.
For consistency sake while the M14 will hang with the Garand, The Garand is just more repeatable at the long line (1K yard) simply due to the cartridge. Sometimes one finds themselves in a climate that the 7.62mm Nato just doesn't deliver the mail as good as the Garand. To further complicate the topic I've had situations where on paper I should have been the underdog with the AR or M14 and did exceptionally well against the Garand.
But yes, the M14 and the M1 Garand has always been special to me.
Just a opinion
