M14: Past, Present & Future

I was on an army post AMU (we were still issued Garands) when the M14 was beginning to be issued as they became available. One day, several new M14's were brought out to the range with only enough ammo for each team member to shoot 3 rounds, our choice full or semi 😲 . Of course, no one chose full auto that day.

I've owned several clones over the years. As well as many on here shot a "few" that my uncle owned (as in every time I could muster a good excuse to do so).
The M14 does hold a special place in my heart, not the same as some of my bolt guns but nevertheless a place. Great firearm to say the least, although can exhibit some quirks which rarely seen. Over all a really effective battle rifle.

As far as long term accuracy is concerned, IMO the M1 has one slight advantage over the M14 and that is a Garand has more bedding surface than the M14 due to the detachable magazine. Also the bolt catch on the M14 is a "hair trigger" compared to the Garand. Of course I might be a bit prejudiced toward the Garand because I've put a lot more miles on them than the M14. ;)

For across the course usage, like you Clarence, I've used the M1903's, M1's, M14's and the the AR series. Each are endearing in their own aspects. The one that in my memory, that was the most fun was the Garand, although the M14 was always following a very close second. Best scores was usually obtained with the AR when limited to the 600 yard line. Which honestly I chalk that up to "shooter fatigue" in the 88+ round strings.

For consistency sake while the M14 will hang with the Garand, The Garand is just more repeatable at the long line (1K yard) simply due to the cartridge. Sometimes one finds themselves in a climate that the 7.62mm Nato just doesn't deliver the mail as good as the Garand. To further complicate the topic I've had situations where on paper I should have been the underdog with the AR or M14 and did exceptionally well against the Garand.
But yes, the M14 and the M1 Garand has always been special to me.
Just a opinion

M14 is just the 308 version of the Garand but is mag fed. Friend has a 308 tanker Garand and likes it. Our Marines on the ship had M14s, never shot one and I didn't like shooting their 1911s.
