to those who may have done this,,,

I have a complete standard action M70 in 270 win, I would like to build a custom sporter in a magnum chambering based on the H&H case. Will this action work if I obtain a magnum bolt shroud? I will be using the existing firing pin assm. Thanks.

There are several versions of the Model 70 action, not sure what you are calling a "standard." If you mean a long action, pre or post 64; yes it will work. You will need a magnum bolt face {entire bolt body}, not the shroud. The shroud as I know it is the "striker housing" that has the side swing safety attached to it and unscrews from the back of the bolt with the striker and spring.

My son had a 300 H&H built on a 7 Rem. Mag. M70 Classic. The smith shortened the bolt stop, put in a different magazine box and milled the action port a bit longer. It's tight but works fine.

The problem you have with that model 70 is the bolt face is for a .270 and not an H&H mag case.

I own a 700 Classic in .300 H&H and it is a neat cartridge. Unfortunately I no longer hunt with it and hasn't even been fired in 10 years. I keep fighting the urge to sell it but will probably give in one day.

ok thanks, I want to say that winchester offered a magnum and a standard acitoin (LA). having said that your thought on this conversion?

You have a standard action if it’s a 270. These were the parameters I entered into ammoguide:

I got the results and you have 175 options (different calibers) to choose from. NOT ONE WAS an H&H.

So I changed the parameters to this (NOTE: You have to modify the bolt face as you stated you’ll do)

And the answer is YES!!!

After reading this thread I just now tried to put a 300 H&H Magnum loaded round into my Win M70 post 64 in 270 Win. It is to long. The 300 round is loaded with a 165 grain core-loct (not a particularly long bullet) yet the magazine is not long enough by around 3/8th of a inch. Sorry.
