Magneto speed sported?

Ok I have the Caldwell older design chronograph and sometimes wonder the accuracy of it. It has given crazy readings before so I wonder when I get readings I’m expecting how accurate they are. So I have been thinking about upgrading to the magneto speed. But the more expensive one is out of my price range so I was wondering what the difference was? I do shoot surpressed. I was also wondering if they affect accuracy when doing load development because I like to chronograph everything during load development.

I have the new model v3 or whatever it is called and I like it alot. Dosent miss a lick and is small compact to put in my shooting bag. Sorry I dont know about the old version. Call the company and talk to them. I did once and they were casual and down to earth.

Ref load development. I dont believe you need to care about velocity when doing that. The idea is to find the right powder load that shoots best in the harmonic sweet spot(s) so that your barrel vibrations dont affect your groupings. When you find the right charge for a certain bullet then thats what you are stuck with. You can then slap on the magnetospeed and see how fast it it to build your dope.
I never shoot groups with the magnetospeed strapped on the barrel as this is going to affect the barrel harmonics. ( sort of like a tuner).
If I want to see how good my ed/es is then ill shoot a dozen rounds with it on but not for groups. it will shift your poi and your groups will loosen up some but nothing drastic.
Some people have made an adapter that fits on pictatinny mini rail for front bipod mount. This way can mount the magnetospeed onto the stock so there is no barrel interference.
Hope this helps

I've only used my Magnetospeed a few times on a few different rifles. Accurracy seems unaffected, but it shifts the POI about 2 moa high. Shot some great groups with it strapped on but I still wouldn't test loads with it like that.

I work the loads up I like and then test the speeds and SD.. Any time something is added to a barrel it will change the harmonics and with mine it changed the group sizes.. I got the V3 and it has been very consistent and reliable.. I am not sure if the sporter has the adapters for a can though. The V3 comes with all the adapters to fit most.. I got mine on sale a few years ago for 225 I think it was. Dan

Checked my newer Caldwell Chrony against Magneto Speed. Same bullets, same gun, & same speed.

Just got the sporter a couple months ago... very pleased thus far... it does shift poi as mentioned but it's very handy and I thought very user friendly..

the sporter model is not designed for *most* suppressed use. its only built to handle barrels or muzzle devices up to 1" in diameter.

Since most centerfire suppressors exceed that you'd need to get a v3 "standard" model to accommodate the larger attachment point size.

i've got a v3 and absolutely love it. it was my first chrono.

i notice poi shifts on my smaller (thinner) barrels, but not nearly as much with my heavy barrels.
