Magpies as indicators?

Does anyone see a correlation of magpies and coyotes? I always have a ton of birds come in, but I don't see many coyotes with them when they show up.

Magpie is a predatory bird , They respond to distress same as a coyote , you will often times see them come in when useing coyote vocals as well . If you really study them as they approach you will learn when a coyote is in the area as they will give it away with the way they approach your stand . So to answer your question YES .

Yes and no. Just because there is magpies responding doesn't mean there is a coyote around or coming.

But like Jerry said, if you learn to watch the magpies behavior, they will tell you if a coyote (or cat) is in the area.

Same goes with the way crows and ravens are acting.

Have seen times when the magpie will be coming, and lite in several trees, or bushes along the way, as maybe to not get ahead of the dog,as if thy would be following him.

Keep in mind not everything is 100%, all the time, every time.

In most cases where I've had magpies show up: if there is NO coyote coming, the magpies will fly straight in and sit high in a tree nearby. Pretty soon they just fly away.

If there IS a coyote coming, the magpies will often stay right close to the coyote as it comes in. Seems like they want the coyote to lead them to meal.

With the crows and ravens, if they show up, circle once or twice, sound off a few times and leave, I'm almost positive there is no coyote in the area.

If they continue to circle(and that's often done right above the coyote as it's coming) and make lots of racket, I am pretty much sure there's a coyote in the area and probably coming.

That's pretty much been my experience with em anyways.

I would say 8 out of 10 times when I have multiple magpies come in I see a coyote. I believe if I don't see a coyote, it either busted me or just did not commit.
