Making a red filter for a big spotlight, anyone done it?

I'm trying to spot some yotes here out the back door, just missed one actually. They bolt when hit with the white light. I have one of the big 18million candle power spotlights that Basspro sells. I can get sheets of plexiglass on ebay for a few bucks, shipping costs more than the plexiglass. Any way, anyone done it? What thickness plexiglass will allow light through best while not washing out the red color? Ideally I would think the thinnest would be the best for light transfer, just want to make sure it's red enough. I can buy 1/16", 1/8", and 3/16". Figured I'd get some input before I bought it. Thanks

I have 1 million candle power with a factory removable plastic red lens. About 1/16 thick. Stands about 1 in above clear bulb surface. About 1/4 in above housing allowing 1/4 in by 2 1/2 in vent on two sides to let heat out. Has worked for many years.

Do you thinks a space is necessary? I was going to cut it the same diameter as factory, 9"-10". My light has a removable lip around it. I was going to remove the lip, place the plexiglass on the factory lens and put the piece back on and start killing some coyotes.

Sounds like that dykem may be a solution. Here are pics anyway.

I went to my big chain grocery store and asked it they had any red cellephane wrapping paper for baskets. He went in the back room and gave me some-free. I put a rubber band on the light to hold it.

Dykem? What's that? Just searched it but found no light covers. I think I have the same light as you Tripod3, it's the Cyclops. Was just looking at it and I can undo a few screws and just replace the lens possibly.
This is what I was thinking of getting

Last nights miss was not a miss, found her this morning about 40 yards away from where I hit her while I was retrieving the one that I shot this morning before sunrise.

Dykem is a liquid dye that tool and die makers use to lay out jobs. I guess you would call it translucent as your able to see through it. It is a very thin liquid available in different colors and red being one of them. I don't really know how even you would be able to apply it on clear plastic or glass or if than might or might not be a factor.

I've used the red plastic sheets they sell for a temporary tail light repairs at auto parts stores. Just trace the shape of your lens on it and cut it out. Works good and it's cheap.

Way back in the day, I went to a store that made stained glass windows. They cut me 2 lenses out of different shades of red for my lights. Charged like $5 each. They worked awesome, not red led awesome, but good. Might try that.

Good luck.

I bought Krylon Stained Glass Red paint at either Michael's or Hobby Lobby. Clean the glass with alcohol and when dry spray a light coat let dry then another coat. Repeat till you get the Depth of color you want. If you go to far use Finger Nail Polish remover to clean it off.
