Making reeds for open reed calls

I have been hand cutting reeds with a scissor from mylar material for my open reed calls. Has anyone came up with a press or punch device that will produce a uniformly shaped reed tip?

You can have a reed punch made by Quackerstacker or other machinest. Reed punches are very expensive. Making your reeds by hand is the best way to tune a reed for each different call.

SDHowler,
I still cut my reeds with scissors, just like you are doing. I often wish I had a reed punch or two, but then I would need to start measuring all of the tone boards I make. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif Now if I had lots of money like our friend NINTH does------Wow, just think of all the neat tools I could purchase.

I agree. I still cut mine with scissors, as well. I am planning on having a reed punch for the production calls for release in stores this fall, but not for any custom stuff.

Thanks guys for your responses, I was just hoping that someone would have an idea or a cheap way to make a punch or press for the reeds. My reeds are parallel or straight on each side and I cut these with a paper cutter. I have a rounded tip end for my reeds and I normally file the edges to round off any bad cuts from my scissor. They make reed trimmers for reeds of the woodwind instruments like the clarinet and sax, but I need more of a taper to my reed tip. Where there is a will there is a way.

SDHowler, you can look in the craft section of your local ****Mart, and they sell fancy cutters for scrapbooking. There are a couple that cut half moon shapes in a couple of different sizes. I have one that I use on some of my calls and it works pretty good. You will still have to smooth out the edges though. More consistant than using just scissors. They resemble small hole punches. Take a look at them, They might help you out. Brian.
