Any dog is susceptible to sarcoptic mange. It is caused by a mite. The symptoms you see are a result of the irritation the mite causes by burrowing into the host skin during its life cycle. Many mammals can get sarcoptic mange, but each species of animal has a specific species of mite that causes the disease. Ivermectin will cure an infected host. Humans can 'catch' mange from an infected canine. It is not like one sees in canines, but more of a skin irritation. The mites can not thrive on human skin.
Demodectic mange, also known as red mange, is an allergy to normal skin mites found on all canines. It is believed to be an allergy developed at a very young age, and is also hereditary. Stresses to the animals immune system bring about outbreaks of red mange. Because of the nature of red mange, it is not the mange we see in wild canine populations. Ivermectin has no effect on red(demodectic) mange. What treatments there are for red mmange are not very effective, and just seem to alleviate some of the symptoms, but there is no cure.
