Marine Sniper.....WOW....what a good read........

I am about halfway through this book, and it is undoubtedly one of the finest military/shooting books that I have ever picked up. It is the story of Sgt. Carlos Hathcock, who was a Marine sniper during the Vietnam era. It enlightens you as to what they ACTUALLY had to go through, and the agony that sometimes came after the duty was done.......like when he had to eliminate a 12-yr-old on a bicycle who was carrying weapons & ammo to VC troops who were engaging an American squad, only after he shot and disabled the kid's bicycle to try to deter him. Man, this guy was an unbelieveable marksman, but at the same time he was a caring, devoted military man as well as a dedicated husband and father (I have spoken with his son). At one time, the VC had put a HUGE bounty on him.

I usually don't get real worked up over things like this, but this book has definitely gotten my attention. It is readily available at Barnes & Noble, and I am sure most other book stores would have it on the shelf.

Suggested reading for anyone who thinks that they can "shoot".... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/blush.gif

I often wonder, when the tracked vehicle he was riding in exploded and he was removed from Vietnam, did the person who set the bomb get the bounty?

Good book, good read ...... I would have hated to be part of that group of NVAs he and his spotter had pinned down for days. That would have been bad enough, but then to have the artillery rain down bringing death to those left would have been worse.

When I finished that book I immediately turned back to page one and read the entire book a second time. Great stuff and a true American doing a great service to his country.

I'm not much of a reader, I dont know how I ended up with this book but I finished it front to back in 2 days.
Kept my attention the entire time reading and couldnt put it down. Great Read !!!

I loved reading that book, among others. I just got through with "Flags of our Fathers" in 3 days. Great story, truly a group of heroes.

I was lucky enough to have the honor of meeting Sgt. Hathcock when he came to visit our sportmans club. He was a very soft spoken man, but his words cut right through to the heart. We have his picture in a place of honor there in the clubhouse. If there was one thing I wish, it is that I could have talked to him longer.

Wow! There is a guy I would have liked to have met. What a hero.

After you get through all of the Hathcock books, and there are several, there is a new book out called "The Shooter". It was written by a Marine sniper of the current Iraq time period. Another fascinating read. I think you will like it.

Hi,the books don't even begin to tell what it was like in Nam.There are some good books but to read them is a lot diff.than being there.Carlos was and still is one hell of a Marine. When people talk about snipers he's the first that people can name.He lived a good, sometimes hard life. Both in and out of war time.He did it a way that only one word can be used "Marine".He loved his God,family,Country and served them all well.Yes they had a price of $10,000 on his head.He will be missed but never forgoten. Thanks Clint.
