Better than average condition but not mint for sure. JM stamped barrel with a gold saddle ring. Metals good but wood has some blems. No gouges but some impressions in the wood and a little finish is gone on the fore end. Ball park on the value please.

Actually buying and I might have paid to much. Its on Lay away so I don't have it in hand as of yet. Oh well, paying to much isn't abnormal for me. I been wanting a 44 Mag Marlin for a while, so I guess I got one now.

Two or three I've seen in the last year at gun shows have been 500+ up here. I saw one for 425 but it was beat!

I have seen them advertised for a lot more than $500. Of course they didn't sell. I ran a WTB ad locally for one in 357 a couple years ago. Said I wouldn't pay more than $350 for one JM marked. Had someone contact me with one that only had 50 rounds through it. It was in mint condition. There will always be those charging to much. There is no reason for them to be worth more than $500.

If you liked it and felt good enough about the price to buy it, who are we to judge. I have paid too much for trucks, guns, etc. Enjoy it.

I sold my 45/70. The recoil of it just wasn't that much fun to shoot. I thought the 44mag might be a little more enjoyable and its probably just going to be a paper puncher when the other guys bring out their straight wall cased rifles. Being JM stamped and a saddle ring as well, I thought it fit the bill for what I was looking for. New rifles in 44mag are several hundred bucks more and I liked the older one. I just stuck in lay away as I have other projects going and there's no hurry to bail this one out yet.

Bill, you have done well! I Have seen a lot of them sell for $650.

I worked up a load for one
180g Sierra hp
win case
Win mag primer
H110
close to a max load
Very, very accurate

Thanks Keith. I thought for the condition the rifle was in it was a fair price. Not a screamin deal but fair. Seems like around here the magnums and ones in 35 Rem bring premium prices and this one was lower than what I have seen them sell for. A whole lot less than a new one for sure. I haven't bought dies for it yet but probably will. Its still in lay away jail right now. I'm working on three other rifles right now and figure there's no hurry adding to the work.

Remember, location has a lot to do with it. In South West PA, that would be a $550-$650 gun depending on shape. I've seen em sell even higher. I has on that was in similar condition to what you described and sold it for $650 about a year and a half ago. The guy was ecstatic to pay that and i felt i sold it lower than i probably couldve got if i waited. I sold it cause i had two and had another project going. If you find one under $500, id say you did very well

From what I see them sell for around here, I thought it was a good price and it was under $500. I don't think it will take much to get it looking good as its not beat up at all. Should get it out of jail tomorrow if all goes as planned.

I had a Henry All Weather 45-70. It was a very smooth accurate rifle. I just didn't care for the recoil just to punch paper with my friends so I sold it. Hoping the 44 will be a little easier on the shoulder.

My grandson has one . I bought it for my son about 1980 and the extractor broke several years ago. I called Marlin and they don’t even have a part number for it. I have called several other vendors and have not had any luck. Marlin has changed this part numerous times. I guess we have a single shot now.

Have you tried Numrich? I ordered a screw from them that holds the fore arm on and it was in stock. Another place you might check-
Al Bolduk Gun Parts, 479-524-2038. He has a lot of parts for older firearms.

Pyscodog, sorry I’m a bit behind on this forum lately. I gave $600 for my 1894 44 Mag 3 years ago, in 98+ condition. It’s a ‘78 model in outstanding condition, shoots both Hornady 240XTP and 265 Inter-lock handloads at 100 yards in 2” groups.
I have several Marlin Levers: ‘49 336RC 30-30, ‘90 336CS 30-30, ‘65 39A 22LR, ‘78 1894 44 Mag, ‘79 1894 357 Mag, ‘76 444S, ‘03 1895GS 45-70, ‘19 1895SBL 45-70. Do you see a trend here, I have over paid for the 357, and 39A, but it was worth it to me because they all were in mint condition. I searched for years and passed on cheaper priced Marlins in poorer condition. Good luck on what ever you buy now and in the future. Riflemann
