Marlin 917 or Savage 9317

I'm looking at both of these guns as I don't have a 17HMR....yet.

Any benefit to a bull vs standard barrel?? I'm not a target shooter and it will be for sniping crows and such.

I know savage has the accu-trigger and Marlin says they have a T-900, but I can't find if it is adjustable like the savage.

Anyone want to put there 2cents in on what to buy???

I owned a Savage 9317....kept it for two weeks and sold it. Mine was the plain black one with the heavy barrel and cheesy plastic stock. It just screamed "CHEAP" at every turn. Crappy finish, crappy plastic stock, crappy machine work and only half the clips I had for the gun actually worked. I know they make an upgraded model from the one I had but I can't offer you much more info and I've not owned a Marlin.

I have the Savage 93 with a heavy barrel. Yes, the stock is cheesy but that can be remedied. Should it be? No, Savage should do a little more in this area but then the price would go up right?

Shoots well, have had it a couple or three years. Never a problem. Somewhat selective on ammo but over all any ammo shoots well out of it out to 100yds. Prone to drift in winds but I expected that. Came with the Accutrigger but I didn't have to adjust it. No recoil. You can watch your targets explode/fall dead.

my buddy has the Savage 93 in 22 mag (cheese black stock, stainless) and he has issues with the ammo jumping out of the clip. he can't shoot straight anyway so not sure how well the gun shoots

FWIW....
I have the Savage 93 w/heavy barrel in 17HMR...zero problems so far.
Have around 500-600 rounds through it and it's pretty good out to about 125-150 yards on pd's.
I've hit them out to 200, but not reliably. It's a cheap scope.
No magazine issues at all.
Like I said....zero problems.

Can't say anything about the Marlin, never seen one.

I also have the 97r17 SS with the heavy barrel. Extremely accurate but the mags don't load the 1st round worth a $&!t and I've pushed several bullets into the brass when they hit the barrel.

I can't speak for the Marlin.

I have the Marlin and it shoots very well. It didn't at first because the trigger is pretty bad on the factory Marlin but I saw a tip in one of the forums that you can switch out the trigger spring for a Bic pen spring and it makes the trigger about 80% better. I did it and it did. I also have the bull barrel and I think it helps with accuracy.
All that being said, I had heard that the Savage 93 is more accurate, but I don't know from experience.

A buddy of mine has a Savage 9317 and I was shooting a Marlin 917VS that my uncle let me keep for quite a while.I like the Marlin alot better. For some reason I just don't really care for the AccuTrigger on the Savage too much so I'd have to choose the Marlin.
As for the bull barrel vs. a standard barrel I really like a bull barrel for shootin prairie dogs and smaller critters.I don't know about everyone else but for me once I have a prairie dog or somethin like that in the scope the bull barrel helps me keep the rifle steady. If that makes any sense at all.

I've got both a 93fv with accutrigger in 17hmr and a 925 Marlin in 22 mag. If I had my money back I'd have two Savages!!!!

I have 3 of the Savage 93 17Hmr's (Mine and my boys). The above is exactly correct with one added thing.....they are accurate.

My Marlin will easily shoot under 1" MOA @ 100 even with a cheap tasco 3x9. Fun to shoot but I can do the same things with my 22 so I will probably sell it

My Marlin also does under 1" @ 100, mostly about 5/8" with 17gr bullets.
No problems so far with 500+ down the tube.
Accurate, yes, pdogs to 200 on very/very calm days now & then.

I also have the Marlin 925m. After replacing the trigger with a riflebasix one, I wouldn't sell it for one of every Savages model in each caliber.

I love both the .22WMR and the .17HMR for what they do - make me giggle every time I pull the trigger.

Another vote for the Savage. I have one with a heavy barrel and laminated stock. I bought my son one with a standard barrel and the cheap plastic stock. They are very accurate little rifles.

Get the savage 93, I absolutley love mine (Cabelas Exclusive)

go bull barrel, I got a ground squirrel at 205 and my luck shot with it is a jackrabbit at a full run at 200, chest shot.

t/c223encore.

I have had two of the Savage HMRs that I kept on the ranch ATV for the occasional pssky critter. I liked them both. I now use a Marlin .22 mag with the tubular magazine. I think it is on the homely side, but it's a real shooter and the handy high capacity tubular magazine rocks.

Three shots at 50 yards.
