Match bullets. Why don't we use 'em?

Hi Gang - I know we aren't supposed to use match bullets for 'yote hunting. One of my reloading manuals advises against it. Can someone tell me what the difference in bullet construction is as opposed to a regular hollow point hunting bullet?

Thanks, Sleddogg

Most bullet makers say not to use match bullets for hunting because they are not designed for controlled expansion. That said, I have had excellent results with the Sierra 69MKs in the 223 on groundhogs and fox. Good penetration and 1" to 1.5" exits.

Most match bullets use pretty thin jackets so too much expansion can be a problem.

Hey Jerry- What happened to the coyote in the bottom pick? Did he step on a grenade

Seriously was this a hit with a match bullet?

Thanks, Sleddogg

Jerry - been considering an EBR. I may want to build one after christmas. I may pick your brain......

The coyote in the bottom pic is a fox hahaha!!!!!!

I think it hit bone but when touching this guys skin, a .22 would have been about right.

my brain is wide open, jerryboy

PS Isn't the blitzking a Match bullet?

I was always told that until I tried them. Have not had any problems killing anything with them. 168 match .308's are some of the deer killinest stuff we have seen. It is like everything else, you just need to check them out and see how they perform for you.

BlitzKings are not match bullets.

The government, military, feds, state, and even local SWAT and sniper teams have been using the 168 Sierra for about 40 years.

Maybe it works?

The government can perpetuate a fallicy longer than anybody, but 40 years entails many administrations.

How true Jack. So I take it the blitzknig is a varmint bullet then? I like the A-max in .224 and .308. Awesome leap in accuracy. I never liked the 52 or 53 gr Match bullets. I got good accuracy but never anything to jump up and down about. Maybe just my results. The matchkings were all mediocre for me but the gamekings(55) were superb. The old HPBT still holds as a good across the board design. jerryboy

I use the Siera 53 grain HP in my AR that I use for coyote hunting because that's the bullet it likes. I have also shot a bunch of groundhogs with Sierra MK's and Hornady AMAX's. They work just fine on varmints and predators alike.

Some folks are afraid to use their own judgement and it's causing us to become a society of sheep (lemmings may be more accurate). Just cause the box says so don't mean squat to me. They work and I'll keep using them.

I use the Sierra 52gr. HPBT Match for woodchuck, and used the Remington 52 HPBR Match until they were discontinued. Usually they make tiny little holes in the chuck, but on occasion they turn that rascal inside out. It can be pretty gory. It's not that a match bullet won't do the job. They just aren't predictable. At least that's the way it appears to me. Best wishes.

I've not been satisfied with any .243 loads in my rifle since Winchester discontinued #785 powder. A local gun shop owner, went to the bullet shelf and handed me a box of 70 gr. Sierra matchkings. He said to give them a try. I hadn't considered them before because, as someone has said above, they aren't recomended for game. They solved my group problem (less than 1 min. at 100), but I haven't had a chance to test them on the yotes yet....maybe this morning....fresh snow....we'll see. Anyone else use these? How'd they perform?

I like your web page, nice.

TerFisIL,

Have you tried IMR 4350 in your .243? I had a Ruger in .243 that I could shoot just about any bullet to 1" or less with the right load of 4350.

I shot the Hornady 52 bthp Match bullet in my Swift for 10 years. Took a lot of coyotes in that time and was real happy with the performance.
