Match Hollow Point for Hunting?

Hello all, new to the forum and just getting started in predator calling. I have a RRA AR15 flattop 20" 1-9" twist. I really like the Black Hills remanufactured 52gr MHP for accuracy in my rifle, but I'm wondering about how effective they are for hunting. I've read a few posts about how much others like them, but I've read elsewhere about how the match hollow points such as the Fed .308 Match loads have a hollow tip for accuracy enhancement and are not designed to expand. Does anyone know if this is the case with this particular bullet, or has anyone had any problems with performance on coyotes? - Thanks!

My father and I shot 1000 rounds of the BH 52 grain MHPs at P. Dogs one summer. Expansion (estimated by damage to dogs) was comparable or lightly better than 55 gr. soft points. I would not hestitate to shoot a yote with one.

Those cartridges will work well for hunting coyotes and other furbearers. I have shot them out of my Bushmaster Varminter and they provided 1/4" groups. If you don't reload they are probably one of the most accurate and economical loads out there. A box of fifty runs about $13.00 at Sportsmans Warehouse here in Boise. I reload and the Hornady 52 gr. BTHP match bullet is my preferred bullet whether in the 223 Rem. or my 22-250 for coyotes, and has been for 20 + years.

Thanks guys, that's why I like them they are accurate and cheap. I just haven't shot a coyote with them yet and was wondering how they would do.

are the bullets that they use in these shells hornady or speer? I would believe they are hornady because most of their others are hornady bullets.

That's one of the reasons i liked the MHP's for fur hunting is that most didn't exit violently out of my 22-250/Swift capacity cases, tho most did exit.

I believe those 52's are Sierras.

I know I guy named Bill from Tuscon AZ, who shoot's 52's out of his 22-250, has for years and swears there a great round for coyotes. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Welcome to the board 311 and dog.

They will work fine. I use the match hollow points for predators and other use all the time. Don't be fooled in the not for game use. I am a LE sniper and we use the 168's on deer and other things in our rifles and they are some of the most awesome killing bullets I have seen. Use the 69's in .223 as well. I would not recommend them for elk or bears but for the normal stuff they are bad news! I don't recommend moly.

Thanks for all the replies! I'm almost out of these so I think I will have to order some more. Going yote hunting tomorrow, maybe we'll get some this time.

We just started using our Rock River AR's. They are 20 inch with a 1/8 twist. We were testing a couple bullets to see what we could come up with. They absolutely love the Hornady 53g hp's and the 75g bthp(match). The 75's are the better shooter of the two and have supprisingly very close ballistic capabilities. We have taken a couple coyotes already and they performed very well. They exited with very small holes and dropped them in thier tracks. Shes a fat little bullet, but man is she mean.

1 in 8 twist AR barrels tend to shoot a variety of factory .223 loads much better than the rest. I have shot them all over the years and have settled on the 8's.
