Mcmillan and Manners Stock Question

I have already ordered my stock from Manners and was told a 6 month lead time. I was was thinking about ordering a McMillan also and keeping which ever one came in first and cancel the other.

I was going through the Mcmillan order form today and noticed it asked for Finished Breech/Cylinder length.

This is my first build and I was not asked that question from Manners so I guess I figured there was a standard length.

Wondering what to tell McMillan and also curious to why Manners didn't ask?...

If you are inletting for a factory contour like a Rem sporter or vamint there is a standard size.

If you are spec'ing a custom tube like a Brux, Pac-Nor, etc... You need to decide how much shank/cylinder length you want. Heavier rifles normally run longer shanks, that can be rechambered once the throat is toast. Lite carry rifles normally go less on shank to save weight and balance.

I just sent in a order for a McMillan via NOS. Before that I had called McMillan and they said around 3.5-4 months.

Yes, what Tim said.

And if you can, always call your gunsmith and ask how much shank he likes to leave on your specific barrel contour and pass that info along to McMillan.
Then when he's ready to build your rifle he'll have the action, barrel blank, recoil lug, and stock all in hand so he can do the fine tuning.
And while you have him on the phone ask him if he wants the pillars installed in the stock at the factory, or if he prefers to install them when he does the bedding.

Congratulations on your first rifle!!

Based on what I have and talks with others, I'd prob go somewhere in the 1.5 -2 " range. Maybe someone else will chime in too..

Tim,

It will be a long range Hunter with plenty of steel bangin' in between.
I was thinking 1.5 myself.

Thanks for the help once again!

Unless that form has changed, I believe that measurement is to include the recoil lug as well. Here is a #5 BRux in a McM Gamescout. I believe I spec'd a 2" breech on this one.

Another option, if you're an impatient sole such as myself, is to check with some of the different places that have in stock, many of the different McM stocks that are available for purchase now, instead of waiting. Len Backus owns Long Range Rifles and builds with a lot of McM stocks. Len also has many McM stocks, in a variety or models and color combos, that are available to purchase right now, without waiting, and they don't cost anymore than if you purchase directly from McM. Being a gunsmith and having used many different McM's on builds, Len can mostly likely answer any of your questions, too.

Now, if you're doing some kind of exotic or custom color scheme, you'll probably have to go direct. Just something to consider. Best of luck on your new build.

Just an FYI. McMillan will quote 12-16 weeks right now. That will be after they get your order into the computer system which took 6 weeks fformine. They may be caught up on their orders vs entered into the system now, but that only leaves a couple weeks difference between the wait times. Thats if you go with something that's not in stock, or already moulded ready to inlet.

Turned my info in over the weekend to my dealer. Comfirmed on Monday and was entered in McMillan's system Thursady. So still around 4 months wait.
