Mexican Grey Wolves

While guiding a client for bears this past week, I had the good fortune to call in 5 Mexican Grey Wolves on one stand and 3 on another. They are a very beautiful animal, big, lean, and lanky in stature. They were of several different colors from grey to a tawny buff to light tan color. I called all of them in to less than 20 yards, and they milled around for several minutes before leaving the area. This all happened in the White Mtns of AZ. Also called in 9 grey fox 3 bobcats, 7 coyotes, and a bear while calling for bear. Also found plenty of lion sign as well. Should be another good lion year again. Calling in the wolves made the entire trip for me personally as well as my clients trip. Although I dont agree how the wolves were put in the area, it was a special treet to call them in. Everyone should be so blessed.

Sounds like it was an exciting trip Steve. We have wolves that were reintroduced here in ID also. They seem to be multipliying pretty fast. I was fortunate enough to hear some last winter and get to see lots of tracks. I don't agree with how these wolves were put back here either.

What sounds did you use to call the wolves in? and how long did it take for them to respond? Are there still wild wolves in Mexico? Are all the wolves in AZ reintroduced or are there still some wild ones that were always there?

We had a outfitter here who lost some lion hounds a couple of winters back to wolves when he was chasing a lion and the wolves honed in on the dogs barking and killed them. It would seem if wolves are this territorial that if a caller was in their area calling it would be a real possibility to call them in. If they (the feds)are going to give them to us hopefully some day we will be able to hunt wolves.

Steve,

A rare and unusual sighting like that would make the hunt for me. That is what makes predator calling so fascinating for me. You never know for sure what will come in. Apparently you have a lot of game in the area where you hunt.

The environmentalists would like very much to reintroduce wolves to the wilderness area near my home. Maybe "introduce" is the proper term. I'm not sure there were ever any here! If it should ever come to pass, I would definitely be worried about my horses and my dogs. From all I've heard, wolves don't make very good neighbors.

Lonny,
The wolves were "reintroduced" 5 or 6 years ago into the White Mtns. of eastern AZ. They are not doing too well from what the F&WS say. Seems the lions are killing them too quickly. They come to fawn distress, bear cub distress, and snowshoe hare very good. Only took one group about 20 minutes to show and the other about 5 minutes.

Bob,
No, they dont make very good neighbors from what several of the ranchers have told me. They hate them, and rightfully so, as they were promised compensation for livestock losses and the F&WS has renigged on that deal. I find it interesting that the lion has taken so many of them out. I guess they didnt count on that one?!!

DesertFox - And thats the scarey part for me. Some G&F people say that some of these critters look an awful lot like a big coyote. The differance between a coyote at 100yds and a wolf at 200yds is difficult sometimes. At least thats what I hear. I am very nervous about the SWAC (my club) holding any sort of event in Wolf country. making a criinal out of an honest caller is not my cup of tea.

Calling in a wolf is one of my dreams and i will be going to Ontario to call in a timberwolf and shoot it within the next five years without a doubt.
