Michigan nitetime raccoons

Some information for Michigan hunters. I have read more than a few post about shooting Raccoons at night while predator hunting in Michigan. This is not legal. Stupid law but still not legal. Raccoons can only be shot at night at the tree after being treed by dogs. A raccoon can also be taken on damage permits at night. Raccoons can be shot during the day by small game hunters or fur harvesters. Hides may not be sold by small game hunters.

Coyotes may be taken during the day with a small game license but again hides cannot be sold.

Our main law allows fox to be hunted at night with a game call. Additionally coyotes can be shot at night only during the open season for fox while hunting with a fur harvester license, or depredation permit. Bobcats are not allowed to be shot at night at all.

Also only a bow and arrow, shotgun with bird shot( no slugs, buckshot, cut shell), or rimfire guns can be used at night. Here is a big reason for all the .17 Hmr 22mag coyote debates. AS a matter of fact you cannot walk at night with a loaded gun or bow to or from the stand. Further more you cannot cast a beam while in the field with a gun to or from the stand.

Guess the MIDNR would rather see wounded coyotes,
road splattered raccoons, loss of game bird eggs, rabies, and such instead of someone taking and using the critters. MIDNR are too worried someone may poach a deer at night so again the legal hunters must pay the piper. After all if a person wants to poach a deer they do it "ALL" legally right??? Poaching land, Poaching license...

Michigan laws are not easy to follow and I have had to call Lansing many times to get answers as many of the field officers do not know the answers.

Hate to see anyone get a ticket doing something they think is OK.

Skinner2 you don't not have to have a fur harvester license to hunt coyote at night...just a small game license....see the michigan DNR website for predator hunting at night. We actually got checked on feb 28 by a CO officer, he was a nice guy and was glad to see we were legal and friendly with him...
