Minask Amp and Speaker Combo Review

A few weeks ago when Minaska first came out with their Amp and Speaker Combo, I jumped at the chance to pick one up.

Yeah yeah, I know. I am a hand call guy. But let's be honest. There are times when an E caller is more effective than a hand call. If kiling predators is the name of the game, it pays to have options, and I was hoping the Minaska Amp and Speaker Combo would give them to me at a price that would not make the the prey around the house.

After using this unit in the field, all I can say is Buy One before they realize what they have and jack the price up. At 69 bucks, this little unit is a steal.

It works much like the Johny Stewart Power Pro set up. Except with the Minaska, the amp, speaker, and batteries are contained in one uinit. It's also about a fourth of the size of the Power Pro.

Here is a picture of the Minaska Amp and Speaker Combo, with a .243 round next to it for size comparison.

As you can see, it is a small compact unit. But don't let the size fool you. This little piece of gear is solid quality through out.

A look at the inside will show the detail and workmanship that goes into building these callers.

When it comes to sound, and volume, you just wont belive your ears. The 3 inch speaker is superbly clear and reproduces sounds extremely well.

The volume is more than enough for almost any situation except where you might want to reach out 5 or 6 miles, and for that, there is a separate jack that will allow you to plug in an external speaker.

I just cannot say enough about how good the Minaska Amp and Speaker Combo sounds. You really do have to hear it to believe it.

The top of the unit is also laid out nicely, and is hunter friendly and well labled.

There are inputs for your MP3, CD or other sound source and separate external speakers. There is a green LED that lets you know the unit is on, a volume switch and a separate switch that allows you to play the internal spealer with an external speaker, or to turn the internal speaker off and play just the external.

The Minaska Amp and Speaker Combo I recieved came with a mono audio cable. This is the only thing I would like to see changed. MP3 and CD players have stereo outputs. The mono cable caused clipping of the sound and a loss of volume. I replaced the cable with a stereo cable and a jack that converts stereo signals to mono at the input of the Minaska and the clipping and loss of volume were solved.

I also used the Minaska Amp and Speaker Combo with a Johny Stewart Prey Master. If you own a Prey Master, the Minaska Amp and Speaker Combo is a must have. They work so well together it is like they were meant to be.

If you hunt small woodlots, and want a small light weight great sounding E caller, the Minaska Amp and Speaker Combo is well worth looking at. While it is not remote, a Nady 351 would fit perfectly on the back of the enclosure with a little Velcro.

My final thoughts? I like it so well, I have put my Prey Master and Power Pro up on E bay. Minaska has done it again. The Minaska Amp and Speaker Combo is a great caller at an unbeliveable price.

Can you give me the specs on the jack that you swapped out?

I have the Preymaster, MP3 and a Nady 351 set up, this looks like the perfect add! I have Minaska's original amp and the 351, but have never been pleased with my speaker set up, this should cure that, and I can give the original amp to my son.

The cable is a standard stereo calbe with 1/8 inch ends. Radio shack has them for about 4 bucks

The adapter jack is a Stereo to mono 1/8 to 1/8 jack that sells for about 3 bucks.

The preymaster worked with the cable that came with the Minaska Amp and Speaker Combo perfectly. Matter of fact, it got so loud I was afraid I was going to hurt the speaker. I used the JS speaker that came with my Prey Master and it sounded very good although those horns are not the best quality. What makes it really nice is you can play both speakers at the same time. So you get the highs of the build in speaker and the midrange and volume of the horn. A really well thought out unit and a great job by Minaska.

If you look at the picture of the top of the unit where the inputs are, you will see some ridges molded into the back of the case. The Nady 351 fits in the center of those ridges perfectly. Some wide velcro available at WalMart in the sewing section will hold the Nady on it. You can be completely remote with unlimited sounds and sound quality you just have to hear to believe for less than 200 bucks. Add in one of their external speakers if you need more volume. For the money, this is the best little unit I have used. Even for twice the price it would be worth it. It really is that good.

You wont be sorry.

Let me know if I can help out at all when it comes. I just really like this thing. Probably the best money I have spent for the type of Predator Hunting I do. Ever.

Just placed my order.
After wanting an electronic caller for a while, I decided to go this route.

Can you tell me a little more about making it remote controlled?
What is the difference in a 151 and a 351 Nady?
Which will give better distance?
I'm not worrying about getting hundreds of yards, but a couple hundred feet will probably be plenty.

I sure liked the review, it sealed the deal.

Don't forget the free shipping ends at the end of this month.

I think the big difference between the 151 and 351 is size. The 351 being smaller. National Audio and Video has the 351 for 119.00 So for less than 200 bucks if you have an MP3 player you can be remote with great sound.

The range is supposed to be about - 1,500' line of sight operating range – 200' adverse conditions - so from 66 to 500 yards? My old DKW1 was good for 50 to 60 anyway, never set it out farther than than.

Hope that helps some.

Is it just a plug and play system to go?
Is there a special adaptor I need to order to plug this all together?

Thanks

There is a cable that comes out of the reciever that plugs into the Minaska Amp and Speaker that comes with the Nady I think. If not, just use the one you would normally use with your MP3 player or CD Player

There is a small mic on a cable that plugs into the transmitter. You need to either replace the cable with one that will plug into the MP3 Player or cut the mic off and solder a new connector on the end. It's not a big deal to do this. THen you plug in the Transmitter to the MP3 player via the calbe and the Amp gets pluged into the reciever and there you go. Not hard at all.

THO, Thanks for all the info.
I have been on the phone with Steve and he is going to custom me one of these with the Nady reciever in the case, all built together.
Minaska Customer Service is great.

I'll let you know more when I do.

Thanks for all the assistance.

Well, now that works doesn't it?

Those guys are great. When we were teasing a certain Wildlife Tech E caller owner about the Minaska being better than his $8,000,000 caller, they sent mine out Priority Mail so we would have it for the hunt that weekend.

They really know how to take care of people.

Theres a story in there about that trip too.

I had the Prey Master with me and the Coyote card that has a few howles on it. We were sitting on opposite sides of a field about 75 yards apart. He was using his caller to howl with. After about 4 or 5 howls, we just sat quiet. About 15 minutes later, I knew he was going to hit the howls again. So when he did, I let loose with one off the Minaska and Prey Master. He howled right back. So I kept this up for like 10 minutes before he finally caught on.

Didn't fool any coyotes on that stand, but I got my partner all riled up /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Why would you play a trick like that on that Dear partner of yours???

If I was him I would make you wash and vacuum his truck!

Oh wait, that was probably pay back for the crow incident!!

Seriously, that was awesome how they RUSH delivered it to you for that weekend!!

Can't beat that kinda service!!!

P.s. THO--- remember the switch has to be ON!
Don't make me tell that story!!
