Mini-14 / AR-15 range report

Man, you guys are cracking me up! Maybe it is a keeper. LOL! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

TTLS, that is just plain funny! I'll have to look a little harder for those targets at Bi-Mart next time. LOL! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

NE223, I went and looked at the Saigas. Wow, I didn't know they had so many models out now. I might just cut my losses and try out one of those. I kind of like the .308s they have. That MP is real attractive. Kind of reminds me of a Galil.

Also kind of curious to send this Mini back to Ruger and see what they send back. The thing that is really weird is I bought the boy a 10-22 a few months back. Took it out back and didn't adjust the iron sights yet. For grins I told my kid to take a few shots at the gong at 100 yds. I told him he probably wouldn't hit but give it a try. He proceeded to hit the gong 8 out of 10 shots. Slapped a scope on it and it's a tackdriving .22. How come they can make such an exellent shooting $189 rimfire and not get the $650 to shoot a bit better?

Having said that, they have come out with the target model which seems to be generating positive feedback. This is good.

And I'm told they have just made a couple more improvements to the standard Mini this year. Maybe they have addressed the problem already. Story of my life. Should have waited 6 more months. lol!

I loved my ruger 10/22 in fact it has had 12000 rounds plus through it and is still pretty accurate. But the mini's I have shot are terrible.

I must have been writing when you posted Carl. I agree. 10-22 is one of the best rifles on the market. I also had one of the laminated 77 target rifles in .220 swift. It was a great shooter. Kick myself for selling it. I've had good luck with their revolvers too.

CW, I agree. The 10-22s sure are amazing little plinkers.

I don't know why they seemed to be satisfied with the poor performance of one model (standard Mini) for so long. Oh well. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smiliesmack.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Take care, Curt

I have a 1976 200th year of Liberty Mini14 in my closet. I had it drilled/tapped for a scope many years back. I found after 3 different bases/rings/scope combinations that the gun shoots better with the peep sights.

Funny thing is, I could get 1.5-2" groups (handloads on Friday), and Sautrday I could barely hit my target. I gave up, it has a loaded 30rd mag in it, and it sits in the closet for home protection.

Maybe that's what I'm doing wrong. I haven't tried shooting it on a Friday. lol!

Good hunting

Thay have made a more accurate Mini, and thats not one of em. The new more accurate mini is the mini 14 target. There was a post here regarding it. maybe you can find it in a search.

t/c223encore.

I have an older model mini that was like everybody elses until 2 things happened.
I engineered a barrel deresonator and found some Federal American Eagle 50gr JHP that mine loves. I consistently get 1" 3 shot groups at 100 yds. The 4th 7 5th shots will open the group up to about 1 1/2". After the barrel gets really heated, the groups will open up to 3-4".
So for predator hunting at reasonable ranges it works and for 2 legged predators, it will do its job out to 300 yds which is about the limit for the 223.
You can send them in to Accuracy Systems, Inc and get some amazing accuracy out of them.

c223encore, I've heard good things about the Target model.

tgrif, that is a good shooting Mini. Can you elaborate on the deresonator? Sounds interesting.

Good hunting
