Mini 14 Target Range Report

I was able to try my new Mini 14 Target last night. I mounted a Leupold 4.5-14x40 VXIII with varmint reticle on it. The only ammo I was able to find in town readily was the 40 round Wal-mart special Winchester 45gr. USA JHP. Overall, it worked quite well, but something strange did happen.

I set-up a target at the 50yd. marker, and fired 3 shots. They were all touching, but 6 inches low and 4 to the left. I adjusted the scope, and fired 3 more rounds. All three were touching again, about 1/2 inch above center, and slightly to the left. I then moved to the 100yd. target.

I shot once, to readjust the scope for 100yds, the first shot being 3" high and 1" right. The second shot after adjusting was 2" high and 1/8" to the right. I adjusted the scope again, and fired my first 3 shot group. .806" and approx 1" left of the point of impact I wanted (1" high).

I adjusted the scope 1/2" right, and shot again. 1/4" right and .466" group. The barrel was holding a lot more heat than my swift does, with my usual time between groups for the barrel to cool. I waited about 4 minutes, and shot a 3rd group. The barrel was still warmer than I like, you could hold your hand on it, but it was uncomfortable after 20 seconds or so.

The third group went 1/2" left and .806". I then thought I would play with the balancer, turning it 1/2 turn away from the muzzle. To this point it was as shipped flush with the muzzle. This was when something strange happened.

The fourth group went .776", but the point of impact moved up 4" and 1 1/4" to the right!!! I shot another group and same thing, 4" high, and 1 1/4" right! (.406" group though).

I then adjusted the balancer another 1/2 turn away from the muzzle, and it shot another .776" group, again 3" high and 1 1/2" right.

I moved the balancer back to the original position, and shot 2 more 3 shot groups. .466", 3 1/2" high and 2 1/4" right, and .806" 2" high and 1 1/2" right. At this point I was running out of light, and the barrel was much too hot. I know I should have given it more time to cool off, but light was fading, and I was curious to see if the point of impact would change back to where it was before I adjusted the balancer. Average 3 shot group was .66" for 8 3 shot groups, with the cheap white box Winchester ammo.

Is it normal for the barrel on this type of gun to heat faster than others, and take much longer to cool? Any ideas on why the point of impact moved suddenly, and did not move back? Overall, I am pleased with the outcome, and will try it again once I find some different ammo. Being in Canada, which puts an AR out of the question, I was hesitant to buy the Mini 14 based on what I have read.

I have pics of the groups, but can I load them directly from my computer?

Sounds like some very good groups (for a Mini 14). But if you can't get some better consistency out of it, the groups really don't mean to much.
I hope you get it figured out.

Good results for a new barrel and a mini factory one at that.
You might want to try a little cleaning between groups or sets of groups while breaking in the barrel to get a more consistant feel for what it will actually do.
The impact change is most likely due to the heat build up and the weight being moved and causing different harmonics and whip with the barrel as it heats up.
The groups speek well for the mini target and I am glad to see a report such as yours about it.
I have a 196 series stainless with a Clark stabilizer on it secured with about 32 set screws at intervals of about 1" in four lines length wise from gas block to carbon fiber part, and beleave me changing tension on any of the screws, will cause different impact points. Anytime you change pressure on the barrel or the length and or weight of the barrel is changed as the tuner does on the target mini, get ready to chase the impact.
Best thing to do is not worry about where its hitting and get the groups as small as possible with the amunition being used by tuning it in with the tuner and then dial in the scope.
Thanks for the report on the Target Mini 14 and it's ability, and keep us informed. Or maybe I should say keep those of us Mini 14 fans informed.
Good shooting to you /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif

pockets,I bought the Mini 14 t a couple of weeks ago and I was having problems also with the groups walking,I found out when I got home that the front scope base was loose,It was my fault for not making sure it was seated all the way in the slot before I tightened it up.It must of been a little cockeyed when I tightened it and the recoil let it loosen the rest of the way,Also make sure and tighten the stabilizer screws every so often or your groups will get bigger and walk all over the target,Mine is shooting half to three quarter inch groups at 100 yards for 5 shots now that I have figured out what I had done wrong in the beginning.:)

You have to use a photo sharing service to store your pics. Photobucket is what I use. Once you've created a (free) account, go to "my album", click "browse" to locate the pic you want on your computer, click the pic, click "upload" (you can upload more than one at a time) and your picture will show up in your album on photobucket. Click "edit" above your pic and resize to no larger than 640X640 (or resize before you upload it). Click on the bottom data line below your pic ("IMG Code"), then come back here, and paste it either into a new post or edit your original.

It's a lot easier to do than explain, you shouldn't have any trouble. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif

Hey pockets, thanks for the well done review. Sounds like Ruger is finally getting their act together regarding the Mini. Those groups you are getting are very encouraging. I've always liked the Mini-14 platform but it's lack of accuracy drove me nuts. Hopefully they will offer this new improved version in something similar to the look and feel of the old Mini. I'd be first in line.

I'm sure no expert on barrels and such but I can say that I experienced shifting impact with many of my rifles during break in. I always just wrote it off to the imperfections in the bore smoothing out and heat, like was mentioned. They always seemed to settle down after I got some rounds through them.

Tell us more as you break it in.

Good hunting
