Misc mouth calls...

Just short barks?… That’s not something that I would do unless I was dealing with a booger barker and mimicking what it was throwing out there.

To be honest, I’ve had very limited success doing it, but it has worked a small percentage of the time to get them to break cover long enough to pull off a shot.

Under normal circumstances I would stick with howls and whimpers etc.

One night last year I got into a barking contest with one.

Had him coming, but he held up just inside the woods & wouldn't commit to the open.

That has been my experience a very high percentage of the time. If you’re really committed and have good lungs you can torture yourself for a long time! Lol…

I’ve learned that I’m more apt to hyperventilate nowadays so I throw in the towel quicker and give them the silent treatment! If you can sit for a while after getting one worked up, it’s about the same chance of having them show themselves.

In short you need good lungs or lots of patience for a pretty low success rate. At least in my experience.

I only recently started using mouth calls but this has also been my experience. I have gotten answers but I've never actually had one break cover and give me a shot.

Lazer32, The context of this thread has more to do with the sounds being made than the type of call being used. In this case, “short barks”.

Hand and mouth calls work wonderfully when used correctly. If you’re “howling” on your mouth calls and getting responses, that’s a good thing. Well, assuming all other aspects are in check. Your setup, wind direction, calls your throwing out with regards to what you’re hearing the coyotes say.

Series of “barks” coming from the coyotes generally do not pan out in the hunter’s favor.

I've used electronic call to get into a barking contest, and it worked. Drove an hour and 15 minutes to a set and got busted in 10 minutes. Figured I didn't have anything to lose and shot 3 off that stand

My opinion-Skip the short barks...

try using it(howls) in conjunction with your ecaller.
Mouth/hand calls generally have a different pitch/tone than "real coyotes ".
Sometimes I'll howl over the caller or before and try to give a the aspect of another coyote "near" the caller.

I do as limbhanger then silence. I use barks only to stop an incoming. On booger barkers, I usually count my losses and walk away cause it doesn't like something!
