Missouri Calling Tips?

I have recently tried my luck calling in coyotes with my foxpro inferno. I have been using Cagie cottontail, and other prey distress such as nutty nuthatch. I had been trying to start out on my sets with the call at around 1/2 volume (12/20) and then play for 2-3 minutes and pause for a minute or two. Then I tried increasing volume by increments of 3 or so and repeat the two minutes followed by 2 minute pauses.

I am curious if I am on the right track with this style. I have heard many people tell me multiple ways. Some say keep call running and just gradually increase volume. Some say pause, some say mix sounds and some say stick to same? I know the realm of people's tips and tricks is vast and each has their own way, I was just curious what you all thought?

The most important thing is for you and the coyotes to be in the same place at the same time.

Agree 100% with GC, scouting is always on top of my list, walking fence lines, looking for hair etc. also game trails, scat. Sometimes everyone is playing the same call, over and over... Change it up, be different, a good hand call is easy to be different. It is like calling turkeys to some extent, listen to what is going on in the areas around you before you start the call, bird and squirrel sounds have killed a lot of dogs for me and not all that high of volume. Crow fighting has brought them in, just don't get hung up on rabbit sounds... that can be a
big mistake, your mileage may vary... but, I am in Missouri also and have been at this game a lot of years, it is not a super easy game to play, but a big rush when you score!!, p.s. decoys can help by keeping their attention on something else making it easier to make your move to the target,

Many years ago, we used a cassette caller with no remote control. So, we played one sound on full blast volume 100% of the time that we were on that stand. We killed a bunch of coyotes playing one sound very loud with no pauses in the sound.

When you have pauses in the sound you are assuming that the predators out there heard your sound, and you are waiting for them to show up. If no predators heard your sound and you mute the sound, then you are just taking a break and you are no longer calling until you start playing a sound again.

When we are using a rifle to call coyotes, we mute the sound to stop the coyote to get a better shot at the coyote. If you mute your sounds a lot, you maybe stopping coyotes out there that you don't see.

Unless I am using coyote vocal sounds, I have distress sounds playing 100% of the time. If a coyote is out there moving around and gets into a spot where it could hear your sound, but you don't have your sound playing, you just missed a chance to call in that coyote.

Not all sound's play at the same volume, some sounds are WAY LOUDER than other sounds are. Quite often I start out coyote calling stands using "Adult Rat" distress sound at volume 30 and then go to full blast volume 40 after just 3 minutes of calling.

I will change the volume and the sounds 3 to 5 times during my calling stands. I normally start with a "lower volume sound" with a rat, rodent or cottontail distress sound at a lower volume and then raise the volume up pretty high after 3 to 5 minutes of calling.

Then later in the calling stand go to "louder sounds" on higher volume and at some point, end up going to full blast volume for 30 seconds to 1 minute and then backing the volume back down to 30 or so on my Foxpro.

Quite often I have coyotes show up 1 minute to 5 minutes after playing a "loud sound" on full volume.

I change the volume around, but I do it in increments of 5 to 10 so it is obvious the volume is going up and down.

If you have any bobcats around playing a sound continuously will help, bring in bobcats too.

I see your from Vienna. We do a lot of calling there. I’m about 30 minutes South of ya. Your country is a little different. Shoot me a DM, maybe we can get together and do some. We’ve killed just shy of 20 since the new year up your way
