I was just wondering if anybody on here is from Missouri and was wondering what kind of tactics you use when hunting coyotes. I have just recently started hunting coyotes and havent had any luck with my electronic calls.

Are mouth calls better?
Maybe the sound quality is no good??
I got tons of questions....

Any suggestions or advice is greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

I used to be the same way when I started, I thaught everything I was doing was wrong because I wasnt seeing anything. If you are in the right place at the right time and you are set up right with the wind you will see animals. You really can not call wrong as long as you or your call sounds like something in distress. the most important part of any calling sequence is the wind, never hunt a spot if the wind is blowing to where the animals are going to come from, both coyotes and fox have incredible noses. Stick with it once you figure a couple spots out, where the animals come from, you are in for a lifetime of memories. What part of Missouri are you from? I turkey hunt the north central part, and there are fox and coyotes all over the place.

I live in Cabool, Missouri 70 miles east of Springfield. I use lots of different sounds. All of them will call coyotes in the right place at the right time. If you live close, I will be glad to help you. Let me know.

I live up along the MO river and calling around here is pretty spotty...

I started out using a JS electronic call as I had no idea what some of the predator calls should sound like and am working my way into mouth calls made by some of the members here.

Most of the property I hunt is public land, bordered by river bottom farm fields and the yotes around here are used to being shot at by the farmers from their tractors and the public land, depending on the season is haven to rabbit and bird hunters, or people that are just cutting their dogs off the leash and letting them run...Needless to say, the coyotes are pretty skittish when it comes to any form of human activity.

I have access to a couple of small pieces of private property with houses pretty close 1/4-1/2 mile and have finally proved to the neighbors that I'm not trigger happy..so they don't get concerned anymore when my car pulls in.

My only advice is exercise a lot of patience and keep trying. It will happen eventually.

I'm at Ft Wood, close to Baldknobber, but he aint never asked me to go with him /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif Setup is the key. I think all the sounds will call one in at sometime. Just got to keep at it.

I live just about an hour south of Kansas City and we mainly stick to rabbit in distress. It tends to get the trick done. We have called a couple in with the yellowhammer distress but not very often probably bc we have such good luck with the rabbit and dont use it that much. Me and my dad have access to almost 2500 acres and we usually try to set up against hay bales to help keep the wind from blowing our sent and coyotes like to hang around them bc its a good place to mouse. When calling start out soflty and if nothing comes within the first 5 or 6 minutes increase the volume. The reason for this is sometimes when you start out loud there may be a yote close bye and they can hear a mouse squeak from over a hundred yards away. with such good hearing and the caller being loud they know a rabbit isnt that loud and sometimes will not come or they will hold up just at the edge of a tree line and look for the source of the sound but never procede. Hope this helps and if you have any more question dont hesitate to ask. Good look, Josh

This may sounds simple but, you've got to be in an area thats got some coyotes in it and the less they have been hunted or trapped the better your chances are. I only been calling for a couple years now and I'm learning something everytime I go hunting. It's a great sport and this is a GREAT site for info. Once you get one to come in to your call you'll be hooked

Here is an excellent resource thread to get you started...

I'm from NW Mo. I use a Foxpro FX3 and mostly use rabbit distress and some coyote vocalizations. I never use hand calls. Nothing against hand calls, it's just that the FX3 fills my needs for now.

I am from southeast missouri, about 2 1/2 hours south of STL....(go cards!!!):) Which is about 4 hours east of Springfield. I actually used to live in Springfield so I know were Cabool is.

As far as the yotes being hard to call I dont think that they would be. The reason I say this is because I dont know ANYBODY around here that calls yotes. I know people that run them with trucks and CB Radio's and kill them that way. I know this sounds crazy but its so flat here that you can do that...not exactly legal but it does work. I personally would like them to come to me as opposed to me running after them...haha.

If you missouri boys...or anybody else that is close for that matter...wanna get together and hunt some predators them by all means lets do it. Im game for hunting yotes anytime anywhere /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Also...one more question.....where in missouri has the most predators?

Use all your resources... check the MDC website under Furbearers. Somewhere there you'll find a colored map of the various species density levels across the state.

My parents live in Lebanon MO. I have hunted the area twice now. All i can say is BRING A SHOTGUN if you are in areas with trees.

First trip out there I called in 5 on my second stand and it was towards dark. I didnt see them till they were 50 yards in front of me. They came after 30 seconds of calling. I was NOT prepared. Had the caller LOUD as all get out and they were just running in circles in front of me freaking out cause the sound was so loud. Needless to say after three shots I only drew some blood on one and didnt kill it. Could have had all five if i had a shotty with five shells in it.

Second trip i called in a bobcat to within 9 steps of me. First and only one I have ever seen in my life. Didnt see him till he was 20 yards and running right at me. Had the rifle at my side and wrong direction. Had to let him go!!! Next day same spot called in another one or same one to within 20 steps of me. BRING A SHOTGUN!

I cannot seem to find anything on predator populations or densities for any state......

Anybody know where to find this? Preferably for MO

I dont know where the coyote population is the heaviest but i do know that for the last several years according to MDC here in Bates County we have the highest bobcat population.

I live in Callao in the N.E. part of the state and usually have pretty good luck with Primos Randy Anderson hand calls.. But this year has been slow..
