I am not so sure I understaned the rules of night hunting in Mo. If someone is from here or is familar with ower regulations please exsplane for me.

Mo. regs state that you cannot use electronic calls at night, but you can use mouth calls.Bad part is you cannot use artifical light, which means calling would have to be done on snow with a full moon. Now in Mo.,it seems the only time we have this condition the temp drops to around 0 degrees with wind.Hope this helps.

Guys Im sorry but what were the lawmakers thinking when they thought that one up? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif Im serious. I understand that when there is snow on the ground and there is a full moon it is bright. We do get some snow here in Texas, so I ve looked. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

But really, "Lets make people shoot in the dark and make artificial lights illegal" Shooting in the dark without a light oughta be illegal. Cause you know your gonna have some yahoo thats gonna hunt when there is snow and half moon and accidently shoot uncle Bob or not see uncle Bobs cow in the background and shoot it. That sounds like MO is oppening itself up to a can of worms.

Is hunter orange required Montana? If it is, kinda contradicting.

It says that artifical light can not be used besides on private land. So I am sure artifical light is legal as long as your not on public land.

Mo isn't the only state like that. South Carolina has the same laws, except we can't even use lights on private land. Plus we have to use rimfire rifles or shotguns with shot no bigger than #4's.

JDM, No you can't even do it on private land.In Mo. if you are even shining a spotlight into a field or the timber and are in possesion of any weapon that could be used to take wildlife, whether this is your intent or not, you will be ticketed, period. The part that talks about private land is for farmers checking property only.
T.M. I agree that it is a stupid law and was meant to make it easier to prosecute deer poachers. The real stupid part is that Mo. has too many deer to the point that many counties you can kill as many deer as you want to buy tags for. Go figure.

You want to get even crazier! In Arkansas you will be ticketed for shining a light from a public roadway, even if you do not have a killing device in the car. Exceptions are Utility crews, law enforcement and farmers checking on livestock.
When my kids where little, we would drive around at night and spotlight deer, just so they could see them. We had great times together. Can not do that now with my grandkids. It is against the law. Hell, everything is against the law. As one game warden told me a couple years ago, "every hunter is a poacher, most of them just haven't been caught yet."
That is the mentality we face.

..TommyJohnson.....Sorry to point this out, but nobody said anything about lawmakers thinking. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Last year, one of the newspapers ran an article stating that the MO. legislature had passed XX number of new laws in this past session. Gee, isn't that something to be proud of, more assinine restrictions on the few remaining liberties we retain!!!!

Missouri does have two types of hunting that can be LEGALLY done with an artificial light. One is bullfrog hunting, but only with a rimfire rifle or handgun, or pellet gun.

The second type is 'coon/other furbearers " when treed with the aid of dogs". This stipulation also includes only , I think, a rimfire of some sort.

Several years ago, my two sons and I would go spotlighting, without a gun, just to look at the deer. MO. later passed a law that you could not even do that!!

As for the farmer using a spotlight to check on his cattle, horses, etc., I know of several who have been harassed about doing this, even though they had legitimate reasons for being out there with a light.

OC, I agree with you that the wardens seem to have the notion that you are doing something wrong if you are in the woods, with a gun or bow. It is just up to them to figure out what you are doing, and ticket you for it.

The part about every hunter being a poacher who just hasn't been caught yet, is a slap in the face to those who don't poach.

But then again, I guess that I sort of feel that a lot of cops are criminals who just didn't get caught. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Iowa laws are much like Mo.s. It states that that is is illegal to locate or precure game with artificial light except furbearers treed by the aid of dogs. As a friend recently found out, that means before you shine a light up a tree when coon huntin', old blue better be treein' on that tree. Just another $85 lesson. The main reasoning always goes back to deer poaching. Like Mo. many parts of Iowa have to many deer, evidenced by the number of cardeer incidents. I have a friend who is on Ia. DNR board that I take callin' and have hammered this issue in hopes he could get them to explore some options. I have shown him first hand the how it works, moonlight on the snow, which we may have six or eight nights a year. Having made a couple trips to Texas for some real night huntin', I have told him that it is safer and managable for any ethical hunter. The outlaws will always do there thing, penalizing the rest of us doesn't make a hell of as lot of sense!

I hear ya guys. Same stupid laws here in ks. I also hunt deer and I wish they would realize there is still a bunch of poaching going on so as you have said, Why penalize the good guys?!!! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/mad.gif

Here in Texas, in the several areas that I have lived. I have found that a call to the warden, letting him know the areas that I would be calling, is a very wise idea. When I lived in Sweetwater the local warden was a real a--! I was talking to him one day, and he said that if he got called out at 2, or 3 A.M. he tended to be a little cranky. Every time we were going to be calling at night, the warden got a call. Never had a problem!!

You bring up a good point GW. Ive taken that advice and have made only one call to a warden. And he showed up!!!! What the heck. Everything went cool but man if I'm gonna make the effort of calling prior to, why come out?

Ive hunted probably 100 nights with one visit of a warden w/ no phone call.

Ive phoned once, and seen a game warden. Hmmmmm

The first time that I called the warden, he also showed up. I guess that he was just checking us out. Maybe he wanted to find out if we were really hunting predators instead of deer. After that first time, we never saw him again.
