Model 7 in 17rem

I found one and love the model 7 platform. This is the older model with walnut stock? Anybody got one in 17rem they want to brag on? What kind of bullet weights did the factory barrel like? What velocity and accuracy did you get form the 18.5" barrel? I was going to build, but I love my model 7 in 7mm08, this would be pretty much the same rifle for hunting predators, just not laminate like my deer rifle. Supposedly it is a mid 90's manufacture and mint condition barely shot, maybe only test fired. Looking for opinions before I try and drop cash on another predator rifle for the collection.

My brother owns the Model 7 in .17 Rem. His is the "Classic" model, which Remington introduced every year in a different caliber for about 20 years or so. I think his dates to about 2000.

Fantastic gun in every way. I've been trying to buy it from him for years, with no luck.

I can't get specific but I know he only shoots factory 25 grain ammo out of it but she's a real tack driver.

If it had a detachable magazine like my .17 Sako 75 does, I'd actually prefer the Remington. Big statement, but I mean it. Just a real nice, handy gun.

that is a model 700 classic, not a model seven.

Really? I know for sure his is a model seven but he's always said it was the 'Classic'. I might have to make a phone call to him! lol

Well I love CZ's but a close second is the model seven.

I'd buy it!

I don't even want to tell you just how many model seven's I currently own but it's quite a few and they all shoot better than they should for that little barrel.

It is a private sale. I called the guy, ends up I know him, small world

. He said bolt face shows no sign of use and the jewel on the bolt is untouched and thinks the plug screws are still in the sight holes. One tiny safe mark ding on the pistol grip area. Guy has had tons of guns and has been sitting on it for over 4 years. He knows his stuff, I use to talk guns with him all the time and even handled a buy from him for a friend years ago on a MKII pistol. He's asking $750. That's less than I was looking at to build the custom Savage I was looking at and about as cheap as the current AR upper prices. I looked on Gunbroker, they're going upwards of $800 in good shape and some in the low $700's well used. I had given up on a newer style Remington calling gun on account of their new stocks and triggers and the absence of the 17remington caliber. This would make a nice mate to my M7 LS in 7mm08 if it'll shoot good with handloads. It would be like hunting with the same rifle for deer and predators as I'd scope it the same as well.

They made them in 17 Rem. for 2yrs. Great little rifle. I don't feel that the 18" barrel really does the 17 Rem. justice as it is suppose to be a high velocity round. But, mine did chrony at 3600 plus fps. .5" groups are not hard to accomplish with mine and H322 is its preferred powder with H414 (of all powders) running close behind it. My walnut stock has never been used as I stuck it in a synthetic (youth model) stock. It has taken a lot of Coyotes and its never let me down.

Not my best targets, but its all I could find.

Nice setup K22. I wanted something easy to pack, short and light. I am mainly looking at shooting red and grey fox with hopefully an occasional coyote or bobcat if I'm lucky. I'm not shooting far or often as I already have the gopher guns covered. I like the idea of the availibility of the 17rem stuff over the Fireball. I've got a Nikon Buckmasters on my other M7 in 7mm08 and love it. I'd likely slide another one from my combo gun over to this if I get it. The price sounded high until I started looking around. These things aren't out there much and are high. If it'll hold 3/4" groups then I'll be happy with it. I was looking to try the 25gr. Bergers since I've heard they are pretty good on fur. I'm not a speed freak, as long as it'll still perform on a fox, cat, or coyote to 200yds and not shred them, then 3600fps is fine with me. My biggest worry was the factory barrel performing. Is the blued barrel any worse for fouling and keeping up than the stainless. You hear the wives tales about them being 10 shots and clean it guns. What have you seen as necessary cleaning in yours?

I usually clean mine by 30 rounds. I can only speak to the 2 ive owned they are a little dirty to shoot. I dont clean after 10 rounds 20-30 I do but not because of accuracy. I just figure its time too. The patches are black when I do clean it but only takes a couple to clean it.

Having said that, I love it.

If you get the 25 gr bergers MAKE SURE you get the match target do not get the match varmit.

As a fur round I dont think it has an equal for yotes only shot one cat and never a fox. Worked perfect on the cat

Im running my 25 gr bergers at 3990-4000. Shots 1/2-3/4" groups consistantly.

Best thing about it, I havent had an exit hole to sew this year.

kyle's right. All of the older "Classic" rifle's were 700's.
Sad part is, Remmy made a "Classic" in a different caliber for 19yrs through 2005 but the one caliber they never made was 30/06. For the 20th anniversary an 06 in 06 would have truely been "Classic" IMO, but once again, they out smarted themselves and discontinued the "Classic" model.
Go Figure?

I've only seen one M7 in 17Rem. They're pretty rare.
Sweet little rifle. Id buy it even if you just put it away.

As for the fouling myth. It's true that the very first barrels Remmy made in 17cal were prone to Copper foul (not carbon), they got it ironed out by the time your M7 was in production though.
New barrel materials, improved bullets, and better cleaning products have pretty much eliminated the issue, but people still like to regurgitate what they read on the net or in some gun rag. Don't worry about it is my opinion, but it's just that, "my opinion".

Luck

Its possible that the 17 Fireball might be a better round for what your hunting, but a 17 Remington can be slowed down to Fireball velocities and they only made the MDL7 in 17 Rem. for 2 years. I think 1990-1991?
The 25gr. Berger "MATCH" is a good bullet, but the 25gr. Nagel is better in my opinion.
Fowling has never been a problem with mine, but after so 30 rounds I would clean it and if I thought I might not be using for a period of time I would clean it even if I only shot 1 round.
Early 700 BDL's that came out in 17 Rem were the problem children and were a 1:10 twist. Remington quickly correct that problem and changed the twist to 1:9.

I hear you kyle`. You'd be the second one today to try that

.

K22, I figured since I'm a handloader, it would be easy to load them down to fox range and still be coyote deadly to 200yds. I've read tons of posts from people saying the critters look like they have been hit by lightning when shot with the 17 rem. with no appearance of being shot until you skin them. Then I hear it looks like an implosion. Going to meet the guy in a few minutes. Wish me luck. You know I'll be comparing load data with you guys as soon as I can get it up and running

Good luck to you ARCORY.

That description has been my experience. But, shot placement and bullet type is the determining factory. Now days there are several great bullet choices for handloaders. 25gr. Nagel (may be the best out there), 25gr. H-G Firearms, 25gr. Berger MATCH, and 25gr. Kindler. I've heard that the 25gr. Hornady HP is pretty good also, but I've no experience with those. The 25gr. Genco was an excellent bullet and my personal favorite, but ol' Chappie quit making them.
For Fox, I would be tempted to use a 20gr. Nagel.

26gr of imr4320 pushing a 25gr Berger target is my pet anyhow. You know but I'll say it anyway "work up to it"

Those 700 classics are nice. I got one in 350 rem mag. 225gr partions are great for groundhogs to grizzly.

I wish I was in your position to grab that seven. Good buy!!!!

She came home with me. Landed a Leupold 1 piece base with it. Few safe marks, but it'll go hunting, so no big deal there.

I had 1 just like K22s, I turned it into a 223 and sold the stock and barrel and then the gun (Stupid stupid stupid I know) but was a great shooter and very light.

Word of caution. Mine with a synthetic stock, 2pc Leupold base and rings, plus a 2-8X32 Nikon weighed almost 8lbs.

Either have the receiver tapped for the 4th mount screw like the newer MDL7's so you can use lightweight Talley mounts or get a DNZ light weight mount which will fit the older receivers. You'll save a good pound of weight.
Oh, and congratulations on getting the MDL 7 in 17Rem. Pretty rare gun.
