Ok gang I need input for a Bullwinkel wacker, My ideas are 7 mm mag, 300 WSM ,300 win.mag My bullets thoughts are 160 to 175 gr. in the 7mm and 180 for either of the 300s.
Or any other ideas would be good to hear.. also it will be the sub-species found in Newfoundland or eastern Canada,
Thanks Paul

You're buying a new gun, or those are the ones that you have????

300 Win Mag is fine, I don't know the WSM. Definately go as heavy a bullet as you can. 180's will work, especially if you're used to shooting them. I'd go 200 or 220's if you're starting from scratch. (reason: see below...)

If you're buying a gun and it's for that kind of hunting, definately go 338WM. It's not quite as flat as the 300WM, but it's not far from it, and it's enough bullet to get through brush and limbs and saplings that you may well have to deal with in Moose country. Lite fast bullets are not a good idea in the thick stuff.

I'd opt for one of the 300's with heavy bullets. Moose can soak up a lot of energy. The good thing about them though is that they'll often stand there and soak it up, compared to,.....say an elk,.....that once hit will most always run for cover. No matter what you use, just plan on hitting a moose more than once.

I would use the 300 with 200gr partitions. If you are buying a new rifle then i would go with one of the 338 rounds with 250gr partitions.

That 338 Win. is something, I seen it penatrate a steel plate where a 300 WSM. could not! Oh by the way my 300 Ultra penatrated also!

Moose are big, but they are not hard to kill. I killed mine with a 300 weatherby, but I think my 270 WSM with 140 accubonds would have been fine. Depending on what range you are planning on shooting, the 45-70 with the 325 gr leverevolution bullets would be a good choice too. Any 30 caliber would be fine. I would be more worried about how thick to cut the steaks. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif And moose burger may be one of the best inventions ever!! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I've only shot a couple. Both were with my 30-06 and under 100 yds. Used handloads with 200 gr Nosler Partitions. Neither one went over 20 yds and both were body shots.

RSAUM isn't as popular as the WSMs (harder to find ammo, dies, brass, and components for) and doesn't outperform it by any means. I'd say 300 WM or 300 WSM, 180 grains barnes tsx or 200 gr. barnes tsx. If you go heavier, I'd say 300 WM because of the case length. If the 180s, i'd say the WSM (short action)

I agree with the 338 win mag. Somethng that big if he gets pissed off i would like a little more then the 300 win. I never was impressed with the two 300 win mags i had.
