Mossberg 500?

I would like to purchase an inexpensive shotgun to hunt turkeys and for home defense. I know that there are plenty of accessories for that gun, but how do they pattern at 40 yards? I keep reading about those great pattern densities in high dollar gas guns, but very little about the Mossberg 500. What say you? Thanks...

spend a little $, get an aftermarket tube and try 5-10 different high quality turkey loads and I'm POSITIVE you will be excited with your results. Same as ANY other gun.

I have the 20/3in guage mossberg (camo) turkey shotgun. It does just fine, I made 3 one shot kills. I put a rifle choke tube in it and have killed 1 doe. Here in Ohio we have the 3 shell rule. I use a red dot scope. It will hold 5 shells. It comes with a XX full choke tube. I think I paid $400 for it new. It has fiber tube sights. Red and green.

My 500 with a 20" barrel, a Truglo choke tube and Remington 3" 4x6 shells is a true 50yd gun. The 4x6 shells drops the turkeys well too.

My good bud used one for just about everything for years. Grouse, pheasant, turkeys, ducks, all fell to it. Never any problems with it.

Another great choice for an inexpensive shotgun would be to find a Winchester 1300. Very short, fast stroke. I use mine primarily for turkey hunting, but it would be real good for short range yotes also......

You might look at the Mossberg 88. It is a well made gun and sells for about 170 at Walmart. Mine has performed very well for me for 3 years now and is one of my best patterning shotguns.

I use a Mossberg 500 Turkey gun for coyotes and it works very well. It's inexpensive, but handles nicely and has been pretty durable.

I noticed an advertisement recently in a shooting magazine that showed two new shotguns from Stevens (by Savage). Google those up and take a look.

The Weatherby PA459 is also something to look at, I bought mine for 399 on sale at Cabela's. It comes with an 18 1/2" barrel, and is threaded for Berreta Mobil chokes. The picatinny rail comes with ghost ring sights, but a red-dot mounts easily. Handles very well too, just my 2 cents.

The Mossberg 500 can pattern as well as most shotguns at 40 yards. You need to find the right choke and load combo like any other shotgun. You could have an 18" barrel for home defense and a longer barrel for Turkeys. It takes about a minute to switch them out. I have owned quite a few shotguns and still currently have 5. The Mossberg 500 and the Remington 870 Express are good values. With proper care they will last you a very long time, parts are inexpensive and there are an enormous amount of accessories for both.

I got a mossberg 500A that is an epic gun. Its chambered in 3 inch and will shoot any thing good. I use a hunter specialties undertaker choke in it and have killed a turkey at 70 yards. and another at 55. I love mine.

As a lefty, I prefer the tang safety of the 500, but for you righties the Maverick Model 88 is a really good value.

I have personally seen two Mossberg 500s fall to pieces in the duck blind. I would get a Remington 870 Express. Has Remchokes and won't fall apart. Just my two pesos worth.....

My first 12ga was a moss500 and a many turkey, deer, quail and doves fell to it. It shot #4 buck about as tight as you want it to shoot with just the factory choke. Great gun for the price. They have a little slop in the slide but the accessories available for it are endless. The post in the classifieds would be great buy for you. I just sold a pretty much brand new one I took in trade a few months back for $150 and that's bout the normal here in Va so you can get a good used one cheap.

Killed a lot of deer,turkey,pheasants,rabbits...with several different 500's. Prefer the newer ones that are drilled and tapped and with ported barrels. Easy to buy a nice used one with wood stock and convert it to synthetic if you want to.

I've always said that the Mossberg 500 is the AK-47 of pump guns.

They definitely take a lickin and keep on tickin!

I've seen their actions totally abused, full of sand and muck, yet keep on pluggin away.

I can't stand how they break down and reassemble though. It's really NOT that big of a deal, but when you can field strip an 870 blindfolded, with one hand behind your back, standing on your head, while whistling Dixie....
The 500 is just annoying.

Since you mentioned it, I agree. I like the 500 but the 870 is a lot easier to disassemble and reassemble. It's beautifully simple IMO. The 870 also seems a bit
"tighter" as well. Still they are both good guns.
