Mountain Cur or Feist?

I'm thinking about getting one of these for a squirrel dog. I'm leaning towards the feist just because I think it will be better with the grandkids. I know they would both be great squirrel dogs. Just wondering, am I wrong thinking this way? Which way would you go? Thanks

i chosse a fiest, because it will not tree as far as a cur. i dont have huge woods, and this is what i needed. but they are the most high strung dog ive ever seen!

I like a feist as well. But there are feists that will go as hard or harder than curs, certain lines are known for this. River run line dogs are hard going and there is another line of feists that are known for going deep can't think of it right now. But for the most part feists are more close hunting and yes they will be great with your grand kids. Just get a good bred pup or started dog and put it in the woods. Thanks Jamie

mtcurman, I don't doubt you one bit I'm sure your dog is as you say because I have hunted with some very nice close hunting cur dogs, but back here alot of the curs will flat out walk you to death. The competition guys have added in some extras and these things will go clean out of the country to tree a squirrel. The last day of our season it was rough about 8 degrees with snow on the ground I was hunting with a friend and we killed 7 in 2 hrs, the guy I usually hunt with was hunting with a friend that has a cur and they had a garmin collar on him and he went 1.2 miles and treed on a den, the squirrel were in little patches where there was hickory and you had to hunt those little patches and move to the next one well we made 3 of those spots and killed 7 and they made 1 and killed none they spent the morning rounding up the dog. If you go on one comp cast with one of these hopped up cur dogs it will break you in one hunt because it isn't fun, if you want to comp. hunt that is fine but if you want to kill squirrels and enjoy yourself with kids and friends they are not the way to go. I'm not bashing you or your dog I'm just speaking from experience. But then again if you ask 10 different people you'll get 10 different answers on what a good squirrel dog is. I say hunt what you enjoy because you are the one feeding it. Thanks Jamie

I believe you 100 percent. I used to live in Indiana, where we got a cur for tree rats and coons, and we never comp. hunted her. She's suited our purposes just fine. My mom and dad used to use hounds, and they said that the hounds just ran miles ahead of them. All the curs I've ever been around have hunted very well and pretty close, but none of them were comp. dogs. I have no experience with fiests, but I've heard nothing but good about them.

my cuz swears by curs but has a feist?????????
I love the coloring on curs JMO...
90% of all feist i've been around lets their nuts
get them in trouble with other dogs..I think
you'd need to yank them right away.......
my cuz's dog jumped off the floor and managed
to lick me in the mouth while I was eating....
dang it boy......hasn't tried that since he had
'em cut out., he's much calmer now, almost tolerable..
and i've seen a few strung out in peoples yard when
some neighbors dog is in, back to the de-nutting...
fiesty little devils, I guess if you gonna be small
you gotta be tough.....I'd go with the cur 'cause
he's gonna be a squrrel dog 1% of the time, and a
regular dog 99% of the time....however a fiest would
eat less.....this was meant to be funny.....

any of you guys ever heard of keith suttonmiller? last name might not be spelled right. He always usually has a few trained or started dogs for sale. If any of you guys were looking for one he would be a good person to talk to....

I have had good feists and good curs, but if you live in coyote country as I do, and hunt feists you can figure on losing one every now and then to the yotes.
