Rancher sent me the pictures, this area is definitely not Lion Country.

Flat country, no canyons or trees.

Horse is doing fine!

The ranch between two ranches I hunt set aside several hundred acres as an ocelot preserve. Not a lot of mountain lions in this part of TX, but seems that some have taken up residence in that preserve. A couple of years ago one of those added the north ranch to his territory for a short period of time. Fortunately, no livestock was attacked, but I did manage to find where he had killed an exotic or deer, or perhaps just covered a gut pile left by a hunter??. Tried calling several times the area unsuccessfully hoping he would still be in the area. Apparently he moved on soon after.

Why do they think it was a lion? It doesn't really look like lion damage. Don't get me wrong, lions kill horses on occasion, but as often as not lions get the blame for damage caused by many other causes. I had a damage complaint a few years ago that as soon as I looked at the horse I could tell it was wire. Rancher was very argumentative. So I walked the fence line and found where the horse had been completely down and tangled where he had ran into the fence. Documented with pictures and took the rancher to the spot. Rancher was still determined it was a cat and at that point said that even though it may have been the wire that caused the cuts, a lion must have ran the horse into the wire! No tracks, no other evidence of a lion in the vicinity. I have horses and have had my entire life. They can find many unique and interesting ways to get cut without the help of a lion.

1. Horses are in a corral made of steel tubular piping. No wires.
2. Numerous people have witnessed seeing a lion.
3. I have attached a photo of a paw print sent to me by the owner of the ranch and horse.
