Mountain Lion in my Virginia Front Yard

Strange but true. My wife and her mother spotted the cat a couple of weeks ago. A week after that my 14 year-old son saw him within a few feet of him as he went to wait for the school bus.

I live in Lunenburg County in VA. Our "front yard" was all field - about 2 acres of it. Now it is mostly goat pasture. When we moved here last year my neighbor behind us claimed there was a mountain lion but we thought nothing of it except for noticing a lack of rabbits and squirrels in the area. Both are starting to come back for the moment.

In any case, from our front window we have pretty clear view of the road a couple of hundred feet away. There is still some tall grass between the other side of the goat fence and the road but that's about it.

My wife saw the cat going across our property between the end of the fence and the road. She called her mother over to the window to witness it. A few days later my youngest son saw the cat by our mailbox across from the driveway. It watched him for a few moments and then moved across our fence line. The road is on the north side of the property. The driveway is on the far east side so the cat moved from east side to the west side.

A small patch of woods runs along our western border. Speculation has it, the cat may be cutting through those woods. Our neighbor is behind us to the east. Besides their field directly behind us there is nothing but woods back there.

My wife talked to the VGIF after the first time. I called after the second. I ended up speaking with a biologist. They tell us there have been reports of a mountain lion in the county below us. So far no reports of livestock being killed. They suspect the source to be an exotic pet released to the wild. Then again, he told me about one in Massachusetts that was traced by DNA to the Idaho or some other western state.

He suggested we try to confirm the sightings with game cams but these are not in our budget at this time. He also suggested looking for tracks and scat. I looked around our property but didn't find anything. Since we've had some rain here lately, I'd like to go out again. I'll try to secure permission from my neighbors to see if I can get permission to look on their property.

As for any official word from the Commonwealth, I'm told they don't officially exist here but I'd face severe penalties if I shot it. Go figure.

Any ideas or advice on how to deal with this would be helpful. From what I can gather, this cat is not just "passing though".

My understanding of VA law is I have a right to protect my livestock. I'd rather not put my understanding under the scrutiny of the legal system.

Be sure to document all communication you have had with the Duck Detectives. Write it in a journal style format complete with dates and times. Call and document every sighting that occurs in the immediate area. Be sure to share your concern for your livestock, pets and family each time you call. A written communication might be a good idea also.

If you loose a goat or....with care not to muck up the evidence take a bunch of pics of the scene and call right away.

I know this all sounds extreme and it is. But if you think there is a chance you will need to dispatch that cat in this age of big government and the "you are guilty until proven innocent" w/these issues it is necessary.

What a world when Drew Peterson can do what he does and be walking around and a person might go to jail for dispatching a feral pet to protect their property.

No H in me on this one, but JMO. (-:

You'll be glad you did.

Thanks for the input fellows. I don't think even the g'vment guy was questioning whether I could protect the humans. I agree the best action is to start a written record - for the record - and document everything.

It seems the cat has not returned as far as we can tell. I've been out and around looking for tracks and scat. I have yet to find anything.

Time will tell.

It will be back if someone doesn't shoot it first!!!!!!

About one week is how they check their boundaries. Keep your eyes and ears open. If they want your livestock, they do possess the skills to get them.

Keep the family close to the house until this problem is resolved.

You seem to have been following the correct guidelines. The govt sure does like to nitpick these types of deals.

I hope to see you with a pic of one.

The cat showed up again earlier this week. Once again I missed it but my wife and my mother-in-law both saw it clearly - it was just outside a fence - posts 8 ft apart and it just about fit between them from head to tail. I was taking my eldest to school as he is in a special program and must be there early.

Now the VGIF biologist wants to see if they can put up a game cam up themselves so I think they are beginning to take this seriously.

We are keeping a camera nearby but thus far the ladies have not thought to grab it when the cat appears. Maybe next time.

I doubt its been passing thru. There's been a panther spotted and have photos of it in Amelia county on the chesterfield line all up and down the Appomattox river. The pictures show it up a tree and then show the guy with a tape measure measuring the limb the cats tail was blocking. The limb was just over 4 inches so it was no housecat. Just like everyone else said. Shoot, shovel, shush.

The Fed's/State don't give a dam about your family's safety or your live stock. They'll be much more concerned how to rake you over the coals for protecting whats yours. A big cat can easily take a child and run off with them. If you have to kill it don't say anything to anybody, don't bury it on your place, take it down the road at night and throw it in a ditch miles from your home. Always Deny, Deny, Deny, DENY !
I'm sure there will be other Lawyers, Convicts and Saints that will offer you advice. Good luck.
