Mounting my Scope...DIY

I did a DIY scope mount last night on my new tikka t3 lite... had to buy the Warne bases before i added the Leupy PRW Weaver style rings that i had... I want to make sure I am not mounting/screwing in bolts to tight and i don't have a torque wrench. Does it hurt to mount the Warne bases to tight? I got them on pretty dang tight, had a little leverage from a tool that can be used with alan wrenches.
What about the scope in the rings... I have heard that to tight is bad but how do i know what to tight is? Heard you can distort the view (whats that look like). Any help is greatly appreciated.

thanks

They claim that the right amount to torque, if you don't have a wrench, is to use your thumb and index finger and tighten with the small end of the allen wrench. That usually is good for about 15-20 inch lbs.

Im afraid i have tightened a few things a little much. When tightening the rings to the bases, i broke off the head of the T15 wrench i was using (twice, on accident) so needless to say, they aren't going anywhere... Is there a point that is to tight? If i am worried should i go back and loosen and retighten?

I think you did fine.I have mounted several just like you.Your PRW leupold rings are made by Warne too.If its the little wrench that comes with the rings or bases I am pretty sure its designed with a softer steel to break off before it can ruin anything. The after market wrenchs with handles on the other hand I think you can actually squach a scope with those warne steel rings.

I lap all of my rings as Jack mentions. Being in the manufacturing game for most of my life, I can assure you that there is a very LOW probability that a front and rear ring will ever be in perfect alignment as mounted on any rifle. It's a matter of tolerance stack up. Lapping is the answer. I use Russ Hadyen's two handle lapping rod to do the lap job.
