mp3 selection

On most mp3`s, can the calls be made to play continious/loop? And, how much space does it take to hold 6-10 calls? Would 128 be enough, or should I have 256?
I`ve heard the Rio Forge is popular, for the price (Ebay) factory refurbished.

I just bought a Rio Forge (sport) 256 and loaded 23 sounds, about 43:00 minutes worth, and it's used less than 50mb. So the 128 would probably do just fine. I hadn't checked the continious play till I read your post, but it has it and I'm glad. I'm just waiting on my Nady 351 and I'll be set! The only drawback to the Forge might be the controls with gloves on. Here is the link where I bought mine. http://system.s2gstore.com/site/RioAudio/index.htm

I was using my wife's Sandisk Sansa e130 while "developing" my homebrew e-caller. It is very compact, has 512MB capacity, is still easily manipulated with gloved hands, and has a repeat / loop button right on the bottom front of the controls. Another great feature is that you just plug it into your computer and it shows up as a flash drive - drag and drop your calls to it and your ready to go - no 3rd party software required. Uses the same mini USB connector as my digital cameras.

It seemed to be ideal for the application, aside from being a bit pricier and overkill on the memory with 512MB.

Another thing I noticed when I switched from the Sansa to the Rio 600 was that the Sansa has a much better D2A converter - when the Sansa was playing, the silence between the calls was silent. With the Rio 600 there is alot more 'white noise' coming out of the horn between calls.

So if your willing to shell out a little extra dough, I wouldn't hesitate to pick up the Sansa e130 for your e-caller.

Another place you might check is Price Watch They have a very wide varity of products from several different vendors. I found an off brand 128Mb MP3 player for $30.00 with shipping. I don't know how good the player is so there would be some risk involved.

I also just bought an MP3 player off eBay and am happy with it. Just waiting for my Nady 351 also! I bought the Rio Sport S30. Easy controls with gloves on, small and seems to have great sound. I got it for $25.69 including shipping. Refurbished. Included everything. 64MB. I put 13 minutes of sounds on it and used 14.9MB. It's also expandable with SD cards.

Hmmmm.... I've had an Rio S30 for some time now that I have loaded up with my tunes for mountain biking and lawn mowing. I agree that the "user interface" would lend itself well to use in the field. I may check mine out with the caller to see how the A2D converter compares to the Rio600...

I picked up a ScanDisk Sansa with one gig at Circuit City for around $80 with all the features needed and is very small too.
I haven't used it calling yet, too many hand calls to use /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-006.gif but have a bunch of cd's on there with a bunch of Christmas songs /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif I wonder if coyotes like Steven Curtis Chapman /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused1.gif

DropTheHammer,

That looks like a hefty cable between the MP3 player and the Nady. Where did you get it? Does it have a threaded lock on it?

I noticed my Nady has threads at the mini-plug jack and though it would be nice to "lock down" the Rio/Nady cable, at least on the Nady end of things.

That is a 6' male to male 1/8" stereo shielded cable from Radio Shack. No lockdowns. (RS # 42-2387A ) RS also has the same cable in mono configuration. ( RS # 42-2420 )

I like the 3' mono male to male that came with the Nady better. Unfortunately without the lock down they do pull apart pretty easily. Kicked around the idea of cutting the lavelier michrophone off and replacing with a 1/8" mono right angle jack. This would allow you to lock down the Nady tx side at least, and the right angle would relieve a bit of side-to-side wear tension on the MP3 player jack.
