What do ya think?

I still got to paint it, and dye the trap

Humm..... to a non (but might one day be) trapper; that looks very interesting. Thanks for the idea you have given me for a few problem causing feral cats. While avoiding the little dogs.

It looks good. I'd like to hear how it works for you with the coni in the middle like that. You may find they just steal the bait off the end. I make similar ones, but I put a coni on each end, and I put the bait in the middle so they have to climb through a coni to get to it. I've never tried it your way, so I'm not saying it won't work. You may be onto something.

This is a "Float" it goes in the water. So unless your cats like swimming I don't think it would work.

Thanks guys,
I may take the backing board off, and cut it like a ramp on the other side. then I many add another coni stablizeing bar, and put 2 coni's with the bait in the middle.

Also if i paint it brown, its got to sit till next season, so i think the smell will wear off.

I would ask what is the reason a rat would go through the trap?
They like to sit on them and munch.
From personal experience I would think two legholds would be a better time investment for you on that float.
$.02

BUT...
I don't mind being proven wrong and would like to hear how it works.

Don't know about that, if your using on private pot hole it would be just fine. I like the leg hold as the rats will dive as soon and they are caught. With a contraption like that on public waterways, it won't last a day. Some "Johnny Sneekum" will relieve you of that and the trap.

Now you're thinking, and good advice from the fellas .

I love floats as are water levels flucuate alot and floats work regardless. Give some floating colony traps a try, too.

i paint my floats i just kinda streak it across it so some is heavy and some is just bairly covered. i think you will have soem trouble with the mrats climbing over the side of the trap. and stealing bait. If you want to pm me i can get you a really good link with directions on how to make about 40 dif ones

Bryan, This may be of interest to you if you have not seen it and may give you more ideas for design and construction material options to make them with. It is something I put together a few years ago and posted on trapping forums as reference material for those interested in them.

Muskrat Floats: An Overview

Keep in mind that the floating "colony trap" version (multiple catch) may not be legal in your state.
