Muzzle loader suggestions for bullets and powder

What bullet and powder would you suggest for a .50 caliber blackpowder rifle with 1:48 twist. My brother just bought one and neither one of us have been around muzzle loaders all that much so have no idea where to start. Any suggestions are appreciated. Thanks

Early on I ran a TC Maxi Hunter or a Lee Real bullet with 90 grains by volume of Pyrodex or 777. Later I switched to a 240 grain saboted Hornady XTP. I recommend the XTPs in an easy to load sabot.

I shoot a .44 cal pistol bullet in MMP sabots pushed by Blackhorn 209. The powder is a little more expensive, but it is worth it in my opinion. It cleans up much more easily with regular smokeless powder solvent and over 3 years of shooting it I haven't had the slightest bit of corrosion. I don't plan on shooting anything else.

+1, if your rig uses a 209 primer. Blackhorn 209 is one of the best things that has happened in the muzzleloader market. I also shoot a MMP sabot through my Knight long range hunter also. 110gr of blackhorn and a 300gr Hornady Ftx pill.

Generally that twist is supposed to shoot both round ball's and cons well. From what I've seen they shoot cons better. My guns have shot best with Pdex Select and T7 but I haven't tried any of the newer powders.

90 grains of Pyrodex RS and a 370 grain T/C Maxi-Ball will work well.

Hornady Great Plains Bullet is also very accurate, but expands very quickly and doesn't penetrate as well.
