Okay i decided i would like to start tanning my own pelts last fall. I got a grey fox, skinned it, threw it in the freezer. I used this page for my first try http://papa.essortment.com/smallhideshow_rioi.htm .
I did the process last dec. Upon completion, it was stored under the house for more work, since it had already dried. When i was done, i realized that i may not have fleshed it enough, or got the membrane off. Im still not very sure even today? But ive got it back out and it looks like another layer is still present, and i feels pretty oily. The hair does not pull out.
My question is what can i do with this thing now? After reading "tanning 101" on here, it looks as if i just pickled the pelt, not tanned it. What should i do to complete this pelt or is it ruined? It doesnt stink, but does have a faint smell resembling old cooking grease sort of.
I pulled it out today, and noticed a light brownish layer over the skin colored layer. My hands get pretty slick when messing with it. My guess of what to do is: mix up some salt, h20 and lysol and soak. Take out and wash off, and then salt it. After that im not sure?
Thanks fellas, im allllll ears
