Finally had a chance to get out and do some serious calling this weekend. Unfortunately we really fought the wind both days. We managed to see 11 coyotes, 7 of which we called. We only managed to bring two home, but so it goes sometimes. The first one I got was almost in self defense. He showed up bouncing through the brush about 60 yards in front of me. He stopped for a quick look then came trotting in. I barked at about 30 yards, but he did not stop. I barked harder, and still he came. I finally shot at 10 yards as he was passing by.
We didn’t exactly slay the coyotes, but the highlight of my weekend was that I got my first badger. He was hunting with a coyote. We jumped the coyote and tried to catch up, but when we came over the hill, the coyote was a mile away and running, but the badger was still there. He is really light colored and seems pretty big as far as my experience with badgers goes. I think I may just have the pelt tanned as I am counting on getting my first bobcat this year and I don’t think I can afford to mount them both!
