My First Blackbuck!!

Hey folks, I got my pictures back from this last weekend, so I figured I post my story.

I went to my deer lease in Boerne/Comfort Thursday evening and hunted all day Friday and Saturday morning without seeing a single mature buck. I've hunted every weekend so far since the season opened, and I've seen massed amounts of "trash" bucks. Saturday evening I asked a buddy if I could hunt his stand as it's known for having more hogs than any other place on the lease. I figured if the deer hunting was in the dumps, I could at least bring back a pig. Well my buddy agreed, and I headed out for his stand at 3:15.

I parked my jeep about 400 yards from the stand and made my way slowly into the area. The feeder sits at the end of what we call a sendero.....about 150 yards from the stand. I eased out of some cedar about 20 yards from the stand, using my binoculars to scan around the feeder before I made my way out into the open. All I saw was a half black, half white body underneath that feeder and I dropped on my stomach and started looking for a place to shoot from. There was a pile of softball sized rocks about 5 yards from the stand, that rose up about 2 1/2 feet off the ground that looked promising, so I began belly crawling that way. When I reached the rock pile, I eased my .308 over the top and peered through the scope. At this point, the blackbuck was facing quartered away at about 140 yards.....and his horns were clearly visible.

I can't figure it now.....but I didn't wait for him to turn broadside...it really wasn't even a decision. The crosshairs lined up for the shot.....the rifle boomed, and the blackbuck dropped as though poleaxed! To say I was excited would be an understatement. I have never shaken as I approached an animal since my first deer at 6. But I was so hopped up as I got closer to the blackbuck, that I couldn't stop!!!

We hunt on 1300 acres of low fenced property, and though we've got Axis, I never in my wildest dreams thought I would ever see a blackbuck on our lease. We've hunted here for 15 years and nobody, including the rancher has ever seen one. He's at the taxidermist as we speak getting ready for a wall pedestal mount.

Rifle used was my 600 Remington Mohawk in .308 with 150 grain core lokts.

Thanks guys, I was sure floating on cloud 9 for the rest of the weekend.

Mario, I actually bought that stock off of ebay a few years back. It is manufactured by ramline.....nowhere near an HS Precision or anything like that.

I inherited the rifle from my grandfather a few years back and began hunting with it for sentimental reasons at first.....but the more I hunted with it, the more I came to LOVE IT!! My 7MM-08 just collects dust now. Last December I had my local gunsmith bed the ramline stock and I floated the barrel with my dremel tool. Under 1" groups all day with 150 grain Remington Core Lokts, I love it!!

I'd like to find one I can just simply replace. I take turns with my .308 600 with rib barrel and 243 600 mohawk. I'll find one one of these days.

Nice blackbuck by the way.

IMO, a Blackbuck is the most beautiful game animal. I can understand your excitement. A friend of mine got one down there, it is mounted on a pedistal. Its really impressive. Congratulations!!!!!!!!

That's a great blackbuck. I've managed to take a couple does (great eating critters), but no buck yet. Someday. That sure is a dandy!

Thanks guys! I didn't know how good it was.....all I knew was that I was gonna mount it...it's already at the Taxidermy as we speak. Some folks are encouraging me to get it scored to see what medal it will get and I'm thinking about doing it. All I did was do a straight line measurement. One horn went 18 1/2" the other went over 19"...I have no idea what it will measure counting the curls.
