Hey folks, I got my pictures back from this last weekend, so I figured I post my story.
I went to my deer lease in Boerne/Comfort Thursday evening and hunted all day Friday and Saturday morning without seeing a single mature buck. I've hunted every weekend so far since the season opened, and I've seen massed amounts of "trash" bucks. Saturday evening I asked a buddy if I could hunt his stand as it's known for having more hogs than any other place on the lease. I figured if the deer hunting was in the dumps, I could at least bring back a pig. Well my buddy agreed, and I headed out for his stand at 3:15.
I parked my jeep about 400 yards from the stand and made my way slowly into the area. The feeder sits at the end of what we call a sendero.....about 150 yards from the stand. I eased out of some cedar about 20 yards from the stand, using my binoculars to scan around the feeder before I made my way out into the open. All I saw was a half black, half white body underneath that feeder and I dropped on my stomach and started looking for a place to shoot from. There was a pile of softball sized rocks about 5 yards from the stand, that rose up about 2 1/2 feet off the ground that looked promising, so I began belly crawling that way. When I reached the rock pile, I eased my .308 over the top and peered through the scope. At this point, the blackbuck was facing quartered away at about 140 yards.....and his horns were clearly visible.
I can't figure it now.....but I didn't wait for him to turn broadside...it really wasn't even a decision. The crosshairs lined up for the shot.....the rifle boomed, and the blackbuck dropped as though poleaxed! To say I was excited would be an understatement. I have never shaken as I approached an animal since my first deer at 6. But I was so hopped up as I got closer to the blackbuck, that I couldn't stop!!!
We hunt on 1300 acres of low fenced property, and though we've got Axis, I never in my wildest dreams thought I would ever see a blackbuck on our lease. We've hunted here for 15 years and nobody, including the rancher has ever seen one. He's at the taxidermist as we speak getting ready for a wall pedestal mount.
Rifle used was my 600 Remington Mohawk in .308 with 150 grain core lokts.
