My Mauser is coming along

I've got my K98 Mauser coming along pretty well. It's still 8mm and needs a safety, trigger, .220 Swift barrel and the reciever needs drilled and tapped, but it's coming!

I Kryloned the stock and used Rockinbbar's sponge camo technique. I'm pretty happy with the way it's turning out so far. Here's a few pics.

Thanks for looking!

Nice looking old Mauser-looks like a BNZ 44. I would just leave it like it is and let the boy use it for a deer/elk rifle as he can probably see the sights. It is hard to beat the 8x57 for that purpose anyway. And buy yourself a ready to scope Remington, Winchester, Ruger, or other in .220 Swift. My .02. TTT

Ben, unless the barrel is bad, that is one heck of a rifle the way it is...

The dad of a buddy of mine brought one back from Germany after WW2 and we used to have a ball shooting it when we were teenagers...I've always wonder what happened to it...

We used to lay up on the river bluffs on hot August day and shoot the Gars that would lay on the surface of the water sunning themselves in the Mo River...With the steel butt plate, it used to kick like a mule, but we were "Macho" and wore the bruises with pride...

Nah- Customize it Ben. Get that swift barrel on it and shop around and get an aftermarket stock and maybe a trigger. There's a ton of parts for the old mousers out there and it will make a fine shootin' iron.

Sounds like you want to make it a long-range varminter. In that case, you'll have quite a bit of work into it. If your capable of doing the work yourself, go for it. I have done a bunch of 98s myself and they make some fine shooting rifles when done up right.

The last one I did is still 8mm Mauser but had a new Douglas Premium barrel, bold trigger and safety, glass and pillar bedding, free floated barrel, new bluing and stock refinishing, Leupold mounts, Sightron SI HHR 3-9x40, altered bottom metal, Limbsaver pad, etc.

As you can see from the target, they will shoot pretty fair.

Good Luck with your Mauser build.

Thanks guys. Yeah, I thought long and hard about the barrel, because it is in good shape, but I want my own predator/prairie dog rig. 8mm wouldn't be that friendly for the shoulders on a day on the dog town(though it would be pretty explosive downrange I bet!) or very nice to big high-dollar pales! I intend to get a walnut Richards Micro-Fit stock soon, but first I need to get the barrel and everything else fitted on.

Edit: This was mtcurman. I forgot my brother was logged in!

You're right, I want to make it a long range varminter, but also a good calling rifle. I forgot to say, does anyone have any experiance with Bold Optima triggers? I'm thinking about ordering one from Midway.

Thanks!

Ben

If you can see it through all the mess, here is one I built for my son in 6 REM. A&B barrel and richards microfit stock.

Ben, This is a Steyr Mauser action with a Parker Hale M2 Sniper barrel (.308) that I just traded for... While it's a little more of a bench configuration, than a field calling rifle, I'm eagerly waiting to get it to the range, if the rain will let up for a few days so the 'swamp' can dry out...This one has a Timney trigger that has been worked down to ounces and lets off like fine glass breaking...

That looks like it'll be a shooter OT! I'm also waiting for the rain to stop and everything to dry out so I can shoot! Coyote 204, how do your like you A&B barrel? The Swift barrel I'm going to order is one also.

Ben

Great looking rifle! Sure like them old military guns. The 98 I used to own shot better groups than some of the high dollar modern guns Ive owned.

I installed the Bold Optima in the Mauser in my post. I would consider it more of a hunting type trigger rather than a Varminter type. Some modification to the trigger guard, bolt shroud, and stock are needed. The Timney would be a better choice but it costs more. Anything is better than the stock military Mauser trigger.

Here is a Turkish Mauser I did some time back. Fleck camo pattern.

The turk was a basket case, didn't feel bad about sporterizing it. My other two will remain stock. Unissued Yugo Mauser, and German K-98.
