Hi,
As a first post and being a new member here on Predatormasters.com I would like to say - this site is great! I have spent countless hours reading and learning.

My Story; I recently moved from the Chicago Suburbs to Southwestern Rural Wisconsin, where I have a 40 Acre Homestead. I have a few animals (Goats and Chickens). Recently I have noticed scat appearing near my animal pens and around the house, within 10 feet of my front door. I hear coyotes every night... almost like clockwork but have yet to see one.

I am a total newbie at Predator Hunting, but it seems like in my area Coyotes are a major treat not only to my Livestock but to the local Turkey/Pheasant population as well.

Here's the Poop that I have been finding, It consists of Hair and what looks to be Grain/seeds or Corn... about the size of dog poop(medium size dog)... I dont have a dog. Let me know what you think! *Bic Lighter for Scale*

I wouldn't call myself an expert but that definately looks like it came from a coyote to me. It seems like a good time for you to get hooked on calling predators.

As you probably already know, this sight has all the info you need to learn how to call them. If you can tell what kind of hair that is you will know what it has been eating. That might be the first sound that you want to try although most distress sounds should work.

Welcome to the site. I hope to see the pics of that coyote as soon as you are successful.

Wow... thanks for the responses! I suspected it was Yote poop...

I have a Remington 700 XCR Tactical in .300 Win Mag with a Super Sniper 16x that will be my Coyote Gun (I live in the middle of corn fields, no cover, so I go for distance)- I do look forward to doing some hunting and picking off Coyotes that poop on my lawn! I will be sure to put extra lighters out there to lure the coyotes right where I want them!

Does anybody have a picture of shinola? I would like to know the difference between the two.

Shinola has a shimmering quality to it, without the bones and hair. Colors range from brindle to jet black, and it comes in packages of 8 unless it's on sale. When it melts it looks not unlike wet finger paint of the Crayola variety, unless it's on sale, and then it comes in packages of 6. Now that you're educated, you still don't know shinola!! Jeez, ya think I have to explain EVERYTHING to youse guys?? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smiliesmack.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Seriously now - Coyote skat varies a lot depending on the season. I find the color to be interesting given the amount of hair present. Uually skat with a lot of hair in it is dark indicating a diet heavy in meat. But this is brown and you say it has alot of grain in it. It's not unusual to find coyote skat with grain or plant seeds of some sort in it. I've seen some that was almost entirely orange pulp, or entirely mesquite beans, or mellon rinds. If I had to wadger a guess I'd say that this coyote was eating a lot of rats and mice around grain bins, and eating his share of grain along with them. Actually domestic dog skat looks a lot like that but without the hair.

We do have a very large field mouse population, I have seen a few rats every now and then... They burrow into the fields and the Coyotes dig them up. As for the grain, I am surrounded by Soy and Cornfields as well as having grain inside the barn for the animals.

More poop for you peeps:

Okay, last few nights have been quiet, no Coyotes to be seen or heard... but then this monster load of Sh*t Showed up last night - 10 feet from where I found the Coyote poo first pictured!

I honestly thought it was Human (Over an inch Diameter) but there is grain in it... Could this be Black Bear Poop? There have been several sightings this summer of Black Bear in the area which is extremely rare for southern Wisconsin.

If this is a Coyote, its a big one!

These are the BEST poop pictures I've ever seen !

Obviously, the local big dog ate the coyote which left the poop with the hair in it. The hair in the coyote poop was cat hair (in which I noticed the cat had eaten a mouse). Quite elementary my dear Watson. Or is it Ailementary?

Ahh......... the great cycle of life continues.
