Not really flaming but what do you guys think? Here is the 2 e-mails and situation.

I WAS going to order from you a no go guage for 22-250. You had the

best price UNTIL shipping charges. A 21.00 dollar item the size of the

22-250 case and your shipping fee was 18.00 dollars!!!!!! REALLY?? I

would be interested in a intelligent reason why so much. I am on

numerous forums and would be interested in hearing from you so I can

with good conscience recommend you or not. Sincerely, Scott

and then their reply....

As of right now the web site only calculates UPS ground. If you call

our sales staff we can ship through Priority Mail also. Depending on

where you are located, shipping/ handling/ insurance, would run about

$11.00 to $12.00. Please give us a call at 1-800-251-7839.

does this still seem high to you guys? this guage is the size of a 22-250 case..... I'm thinking a 4x6 bubble pack envelope......

Cost is up on everything. However $18 seems quite high. $12 may be closer . Many companies figure merchandise profit into S/H in order to get sales on lower price.
I ordered from there once. Shipping prevented me from considering it again. Haven't missed anything in many years.

I work in the receiving and shipping department of a retail business and fuel surcharges are killing us. So, those charges are passed on to the customer like you and me.

Seems really high to me. I was going to order some 22lr shells the other day and the shipping was more then the shells cost.

Cabelas has a deal until the 6th if you have a clothing item your order ships for a penny. I found a hat for $2.88.

Fuel prices are at all time highs, what do you think UPS trucks run on, smurf farts? As for ordering from cabelas, they are one of the only websites that charge sales tax, I hate that.

o.k I do work for myself and have for 16yrs. I know all to well about gas and trucks. I know nothing about smurf farts however. Heres a comparison,

natchez 21.00 for guage +18 shipping = 39.

Midway 25.00 for guage, ejector spring and ejector rod, plus 4.00 shipping. 39.47.

Wonder what midway uses to pay their people and what they run their trucks on........

If I am wrong so be it. I have no ego to bruise however, I have seen 'deals' come only to see people make their money on shipping and handling fees. really frustrating. I have ordered from natchez before and have good luck so I am not looking to take away their business. but 18 dollars for a 21 dollar item got my attention.

$18 for shipping a part that small is ridiculous! I believe they charge a $3.99 handling fee, plus their shipping fee. I recently bought a scope from Natchez and about choked when I saw how much the shipping was. The scope was over $100 off regular price so I bent over and took the shipping fee. Unless I'm getting a super great price on something, I'll give my business to a company that ships for a reasonable price and doesn't price gouge with "handling" charges. Cabelas will ship to store free, or I usually find a coupon or promo code to offset shipping when I buy from others.

I'd say their marketing people are on the ball!! Almost perfectly matches up with their biggest competitors price overall, but has that "much lower product price" that got your attention in the first place. I imagine if you wait till you order a few more things, the overall shipping will seem pretty decent. JMHO.

They charge you sales tax because there's a Cabela's store in Minnesota.

Friend of mine ordered 2000 rds of lake city brass last week and the shipping was 25 bucks, I thought that wasn't too bad considering their brass was 30 dollars a thousand cheaper then midway.

Would have been 3000 but limit 2 per customer, that extra 1000 was suppose to go to me. Rats

I was going to order some bullets from Natchez last week. When I saw the shipping price of $17.50 for two boxes of 90 grain bullets I changed my mind. Midway had them back in stock this week and their shipping was $9.47. I guess Midway has trucks that get better fuel milage then Natchez.

Check Graff and Sons its usually a toss up between them and midway. Graffs has a flat rate shipping on most items. Never hurts to shop.

I only make bigger orders from Natchez when I find some good deals. There shipping charges have always been pretty high compared to most of the other places.

I bought a scope from Natchez back when gas was cheaper and they got me for right at 22.00 shiping. Same week I bought a scope from Graf and Sons they charge me 4.95 handling fee only. Both scopes where about the same price. I haven't bought anything from Natchez since. I still buy from Graf And Sons, some times they waive they 4.95 handing charge on orders over 100.00.

I always shop the landed cost price. Usually on 3 to 4 vendors of the same item. Yes, shipping is a big ticket item, but where the money is made is in the handling costs. The handling should be figured in the cost of the overhead. It would be like having a carpenter come to your house to build something, agree on a price then he hands you a bill with extra price on usage of nail guns, nails, screws, etc.
A few years ago Graf & Son's prices were higher than others but they included shipping. Things have changed and it's called marketing.

All these services are way overused. Why? Because companies are too lazy to send someone to the P.O. once a day. I sold a bore guide to a guy. Shipping USPS Priority Mail was like $11.00. First class mail was under $4.00. Forget non Postal services for residential delivery. FedEx is better than UPS, but still high. Those companies don't want to deliver that one package to that one house down that long road. They want to pull up to a business, drop off multiple packages, and pick up multiple packages. So they charge an exorbitant rate. And as for supplies, UPS and FedEx and the USPS GIVE AWAY most of the packaging (boxes and envelopes) for FREE. Newspaper in the form of sale papers etc is also free.

Lots of mail order businesses have great prices but they make it upon their shipping prices. Natchez is one of them. I have ordered one product from them because of the great price. It was a phone order and when they added on shipping it wasn't any better of a deal than I could have gotten elsewhere. I don't waste any time on them anymore.

I understand your point, however, there are two sides to every issue. I owned and operated a parts business with customers in every state in the union for over 25 years and often shipped small parts which resulted in shipping and merchandise being equal.

Our policy was to price our merchandise competitively and separate actual shipping cost + packaging materials cost (which the customer is paying wherever he chooses to shop, whether hidden in the price of the merchandise or shown as S&H on the invoice). At the time, post office did not supply boxes, bags & other shipping materials.

As you pointed out, the bottom line between midway and natchez was essentially the same, natchez simply showed you the breakdown. In the end, the customer always pays the supplier's overhead or the supplier will soon close his doors and shipping costs have gone through the roof due to the lack of a sensible energy policy by the current administration.

As for charging sales tax, if a supplier has a physical presence (store or resident sales staff) in any given state, or if the supplier delivers the order in company owned equipment (as opposed to a common carrier) that supplier is required by law to collect sales tax for the state where delivery was made.

Hope this helps explain the difference in the method used by various companies to recover their operating costs.

Regards,
hm
