How has the coyote hunting been around Oneill and
Norfolk area this last year ? I'd like to go there this fall for some coyote hunting. Thanks

I realize that we had no snow for the rut, as for the last 5+years but plenty of dogs out there. They are getting more savy to calls. When you go out to Norfork area check out for pumas, mtnn lions, and cougars. they are here in Iowa and really over there. My Bro lives on the Platt river and tells me they are in the area.

Poor. Most of the guys I know found it tough going this year. Mild winter for one. I started calling around Nov. 1st and didn't get one in till late Feb. and my partner shot it. None since. Some responces, got to talk to a few, but it was like night and day from last year. I have had far less trouble during calving season too so I think numbers are down.

Flatshot: Do you live around Oneill? If I remember
while driving through there last year, it looked like gently rolling hills. That's the kind of land we want to go to for calling coyotes. I've got time to make connections to go in late October
let me know if you've got any suggestions. Iowa is jammed up with farms every section. Thanks.

Jim, have you hunted the area you are talking about? We would really like to shoot bobcat along with coyotes. We might have a connection around Norfolk to check with. It's got to be better than some of Iowa i've seen. Thanks, how did you do this past year. I shot exactly none.

It's a pretty geologically diverse area around here (O'Neill). Large expances of table flat irrigated crop land and wide open prairie/pasture/hay meadows. Just to the North along the Eagle Creek and Niobrara river there are some very steep cuts, heavily forested gullies, and tough going. These are my favorite, but are hard to get a toe in the door to hunt. Most land has been spoken for or rented for hunting rights. So I spend alot of time out in the flats and most years do OK. South of here you get into the Sandhills region and that varies from long and gentle to downright impossible to walk up. This is the area where you might find that the 7 mile road you're on is actually someone's driveway. There's coyotes out there, but very little cover to conceal yourself in. Its getting hard to hunt away from houses around here too. Within a mile either side of me there are 11 houses, and I'm out in the country 3 miles. Its getting worse too.

Flatshot,
I plan to spend a few days near Oneill about 1st or second week of May. I have made arrangements to do some coyote whacking up there. I'm hoping to howl in a few of those calf eaters. Wish me luck now will you? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Good luck Rich! Whack 'em all. I'll be doing the farm thing, dreaming of next fall and trying to figure out what to do with all the reloads I never fired. One evening I stood on my deck and decided to practice howling for a bit. 20 seconds into the session a coyote challenges me from about 200 yards away over a small hill across the road. I boogied inside, grabbed a rifle and set up behind a barrel out by the shop, and let fly with the rabbit. A pickup pulls up and stops in front of me, watching the coyote LEAVE. He never saw me. Still can't believe how restrained I was as the pickup drove off. I wanted to ventilate some sheet metal bad. It was that kind of year. Oh well, more for you that way! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I have not heard about any mountain lion sights near norfolk. I live about 35 minutes from there. But I have not seen many yotes this year and neither has my stepdad. The mild winter has alot to do with it.
But good luck.
