I sanded all the original finish off the stock of the 788 Remington I bought this week. What is the best stain/finish to put up to get that reddish brown finish you see on stocks like Ruger's or the Remington CDL? Also, Finish with polyurethane stain or interior stain, then Tung oil?

If you have the white colored stock, it is a birch wood and you will not get that remington color. I have tried several different stains and it does not take well. The best looking stock of all mine i just put a clear varnish on. It is a honey blonde in color. the ones I tried to stain all came out streaked dark and light. Some of these wood workers may have a better solution. Remington made some of the stocks in walnut and they will darken just like the 700 stock do. I have tried the colored varnish and it will work to darken the wood but it is merely a shell finish. If it chips off you will have a white spot. I am looking forward to someone giving a better solution, maybe I can redo some of mine.

This is a 788 that I built myself. The stock is refinished with Olympia traditional walnut stain polyurethane combo. It says one step on the can but, I would recomend at least 3 coats with a fine steel wool in between coats.

Rem shooter, was that a birch or walnut stock. I couldnot get any stain to go in my birch stock. It would go in some but left streaks in it. It was as if the wood had two densities.

Here is my 788 - I just used some stain I got at Walmart - it was supposed to be kind of a cherry walnut color and came out basically brown. Sorry - I don't remember the color I used.

After I got it stained, I used polyurethane - I think 10 coats.

The stock I threw in the trash was birch. Some body already gave it a two tone stain job and it was cracked to boot. The stock in the pic is walnut and it came from a fellow shooter on another site. I traded him some handmade predator calls for it. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif
