Need a good shooting rest

Question for you all.
I'm wanting to get a good shooting rest looking at Caldwell lead sleds.
Any of you all have any opinions on them or anything similar to them.

Caldwell is China junk, plastic in all the wrong places. Look to Sinclair or Hart for a cast iron front rest that will last forever, and have no slop. Weight is your friend here. You step up from there with several joystick rest, but you get into serious money quick. Get a good thick bottomed, high eared, rear bag, and your set for life. Buy once, no crying later, spare parts available.

I have had a Caldwell lead sled for 10 years.
It is not that cheap one that came out a few years ago.
That cheap one is junk.
Mine is not made out of plastic.

I've used the Caldwell lead sled for a couple of years and it has done well, but is certainly not perfect by any means.

There is definitely a lot of junk ones out there.

I bought a used Wichita rest probably 20 years ago at a flea market. Used it again today. It will still be usable long after I'm gone.

I also have an older one, probably around the same age. It's not perfect but its not junk either

I prefer a quality set of bags instead of a rest like some of the ones mentioned. Check out Dog-Gone-Good bags. Great stuff

I think you got the Caldwell Steady Rest confused with the lead sled.. I got the lead sled along with the Caldwell stinger.. The stinger is not bad of a rest and works for ARs, But I prefer bags most the time..

Yes Sir, love my medium front dog-gone-good bag paired with a rabbit-ear Prottektor rear.

Good rest and lead sled is an oxymoron. You don't even get on the rifle properly with one.

The Rock BR is a decent one. Bald Eagle is another...though a bit expensive.

For the vast majority of my shooting, a Harris on a QD is the best option. Protektor rear bags, though I am looking at other options.

I have a Rock BR and the windage plate has broken twice on it. Last time it broke, I just fabricated a plate out of 1/2 steel. No more windage adjustment but it don't break now. Still prefer my cast iron Wichita the best. It stays in the truck so I always have it with me.

A lead shed is good for its intended use, tame heavy recoil long guns. For sighting in slug guns or patterning shotguns and load work of belted mag rifles with bullets over 200 grains I will use mine. After that I usually use a bipod and rear bag, since most of my shooting is done off the bipod. I leave to shoot prairie dogs in a couple weeks, normally I prone with a bipod. The grass is much taller this year so I will take a portable bench with an Outers varmint rest, it swivels and adjusts vertically quickly. Bipod and bags will travel with, just in case they are needed.

I shot benchrest for a lot of years. Have a bald eagle rest and an old Wichita with a bald eagle top on it. I'm kind of fond of the old Wichita as well. I filled the voids on the underside of the legs with lead so it is heavy and rock solid. Using the correct sand is important too. Zircon sand from a foundry supply house is what I use. Super dense and your bags have no mush to them. Much cheaper than buying the "Heavy Sand".
