Hi guys heres a nother question for you. what would make a good skunk bait? the reason im askeing is that im trying to pull the skunks away from some nesting ducks. and into a cage trap. Thank you /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif

I would use sardines. You may catch other animals (coons, feral cats, fox, etc.), but if you are trying to protect the ducks, you will want to catch anything else that goes for the sardines as well as the skunks. One other predator that will clean out the eggs and baby ducks are snakes. So, if the eggs or ducklings disappear, and you don't catch anything in your trap, it may be snakes.

I do Nusiance wild life control and get to trap millions of skunks..Sardines are the best I have found..get the cheap cans (in water) or oil..
You my get a coon or 2 while your at it!! But they work the best!

Hi Coyotehunter. I also do some nuisance animal control. Haven't hit a "million" skunks yet though. LOL. But I've caught a heck of a lot. The above mentioned baits work great. I use peanut butter as another option. Depends where I'm catching them usually. Especially if trying to avoid domestic cats. Of course you may want to thin the cats out even more if they are around.

If you are going to be removing a lot of skunks, you might consider a skunk trap over a cage trap. I like the Minn. Plasti Catch. Well sealed and easy to transport skunks without the worry of getting sprayed.

Good luck, Curt

Ok, Ok, maybe not a million ..I have done just over 400 in the last 2 years alone..to me..thats close to a million!! I got a 500 acre farm here..if they EVER start growing back after all I have planted here I'm in big trouble!!

sardines or tuna work great. if its snakes take two of the plastic easter eggs and put one on one side of a fence that the egg wont fit thru and put the other on the other side. when the snake eats one and goes thru the fence after getting the first down the hatch a liitle then eats the other egg on the other side of the fence he will be stuck there till you can catch him. have never done this personaly and dont know if the old timer that told me about this method was just pulling my leg or not. he did however have a bottle in his hand.LOL
Sportingly
Cracker

Theres more than one way to skin a cat, but only one way to skin a frog.

Any meat bait will work, or professional lure for coyotes. I once tried only fox urine at sets and still caught the darn things! It seems to me it is hard not to catch them. The only way I can avoid most of them is to go to a 3# pan tension.T20

He WANTS to catch them Tactical20. Trying to keep em outta the duck nests.

You say you used only fox urine at some sets and STILL caught skunks? Not surprising at all. Skunks ar naturally attracted to that scent.

yes, I understand that, as I said it is hard to keep them out of the traps. They seem to get into anything that you use. I also understand that some items may work better than others. I don't do damage control, those guys probably have a good idea what works in certain situations. I was only putting in my experiences with the smelly things.T20
