Need a scope for a Henry 17hmr, let's see your lever gun scopes

I've been looking for a while and yesterday found an octagon barreled Henry at the gun show for a good price. I picked it up for the missus for v-tines day. Sighted it in today with the irons and it's deadly, smooth, and just a lot of fun. She murdered some water bottles.

But scoping it would be the plan if we want to get serious with pdogs sometime. So now I'm looking for an appropriate scope. Probably a low power variable that is not overbearing and ruin the lines of the rifle. Needs to be short from the turrets back as these rimfire receivers don't have a lot of room to mount a scope very far forward. Right now I'm thinking a 2-7 Leupold Rifleman or vx-1, gloss finish would be nice.

Recommendations? Pics? Thanks!

Its a federal law that no scopes can be put on any lever action.....:)
I broke that law in the 70s when I ran a 4x on a 45-70 Marlin 1895 though.
A 2-7x would be good on that one.

Haha I feel the same way... The problem is that my eyes don't agree. I also think a 2-7 is ideal and should help the rifle reach it's potential. I looked it over, laying my Marlin with a 2-7x Nikon over the Henry, and I think it will work fine. My BLR is much shorter and makes it very difficult to get a scope mounted far enough forward but this Henry is sized pretty much like the Marlin, maybe even a bit further forward.

Now the problem is that I will need pretty high rings unless I want to remove the rear sight.

^^^ I removed the rear sight & filled it w/a blank, easy to do at home also as its just drifted in, used a small brass drift rod and 8oz peen hammer to tap it out & install the blank.

I have also broken the law by putting scopes on my Marlin lever guns, My 336cs 30-30 wears a VX 2 2-7x33, my 444S wears a VX II 2-7x33 also, and now I am going to put a VX2 2-7x33 on my 1896GS 45-70. The VX 1 would be my next choice. Enjoy your new Henry.

Yes that is what I should do with the blank. The sight moves easily, just loosen the set screw and tap it over with a nylon punch. We zeroed the sights today and plinked a few rounds. I really want to see what potential this rifle has afa accuracy. Thanks for the tips.

Hey that doesn't look out of place to me. Well I robbed a 2-7 Nikon off of the Marlin and got it mounted up with some Weaver rings I had laying around. Had to remove the sight like I thought and I just ordered a hammer spur and dovetail blank. Tomorrow if the wind isn't howling we'll see how it shoots.

Hey that's pretty cool. So the front mount attaches to the screw holes in the barrel under the rear sight, or does it slide into the dovetail?

I believe that is correct, you slide into the dovetail.
