Need help choosing right ring height

I want the lowest scope mounting possible and I dont know the math or totally familiar on how to go about figuring out if its going to work or not with low rings, or if I need mediums.

Rifle is a Rem 700 243 win.

Base is a 1 piece Weaver Extended Tactical w/20 MOA

Scope is a Vortex Viper 6.5-20x44, 30mm tube.

Rings I am looking at are the Weaver 6 screw tactical in either low or medium height. I would love to be able to get away with the lows, but I dont wanna order them to find out they wont clear and have to send them back and get mediums, etc...

Thanks in advance.

You might consider calling the Weaver Cust Service dept since you are using a Weaver base and rings...

I know that when I was mounting my Burris scope, I called Burris for their specifications on the proper rings and got excellent and correct answers...

I would think Weaver could provide the same service/info....

kk25, I'm sure lows would be fine. Looking at the pics of the weaver rails they look no taller than badger/seekins rails. I can't find any info on line about their ring heights though.

I've ran both badger/seekins' rings/rails in LOW (which are .823") with 50mm Nightforces on rem varmint, #6 Broughton straight taper's, and Rock Creek #7's and M40 contours with no clearance issues even on the truck axle contours. There is a big difference in barrel diameter with the Rem Varmint contours compared to the straight tapers at the area where the scope obj's usually end up. I still think you'd be more than fine with the lows.

If your really doubting the Lows working just order both and return the one that you don't need.

Here's the clearance shown with a 50mm obj and the #6 st taper broughton with rail and .823" (low) rings.

These are also the .823" lows with a Rock Creek Rem Varmint contour. Scope is only a 40mm obj, but you can see tons of daylight there. 2mm closer to the barrel for your 44mm obj won't make a bit of difference. IMO.

Stack washers or coins on your base and set your scope on them. When you get the desired height, measure the thickness of the stack and that is the needed height from base to ring saddle. Look at the ring listings, many will give this height. Here is another tutorial. Ring height selection

Thanks brdeano. Guess pictures work to lol.

I found a pair of the Weaver medium tacticals about 1/2 hour from here so I made the drive up there to check em out, definately way to tall.

Lows are going to be the ticket, but they were out and so is everywhere else I've looked online, as well as the weaver 20 MOA base.

So looks like I"m stuck waiting some more...
